Davis 1st Grader Receives Award from Bernie’s Book Bank
Congratulations to Will Bui, who has won the Nick DeMarco Award! Nick was an advocate for education and literacy and personified kindness, integrity and teamwork in his life. This award is a way to honor and recognize students who embrace the same wonderful qualities. Will’s teacher, Mrs. Gerard, nominated Will as he also personifies kindness, helpfulness, and an inspiring love of learning. Will is especially interested in fire trucks and checks with the LRC Director every week to see if new books have arrived! The classroom appreciates the enthusiastic way he shares about learning experiences with his family and how respectful and helpful he is to peers. Will is going to receive an award certificate and a gift certificate to a local bookstore. Congratulations!
Last Visit from Pawsitive Therapy Troupe
We have been so fortunate to have the handlers and dogs of Pawsitive Therapy Troupe come and visit Davis every month. Our students love having the opportunity to read to their furry friends. Thank you to Louie, Odin, and Johnny for brightening our students’ day. We can’t wait to see you again next year!
Davis Primary Summer 2023 Read Aloud A Boy Called Bat by Elana K. Arnold
We are excited to announce that this summer our students and staff are invited to participate in a virtual book club with the book A Boy Called Bat by Elana K Arnold! A Boy Called Bat is the first book in its series and is funny, heartfelt, and irresistible. The book stars an unforgettable young boy on the Autism Spectrum. We know this book will be a fun way to keep every child engaged in reading and connecting with our school community this summer! Don’t miss out on the opportunity for discussions around acceptance and facing challenges by having our students read at home and along with us via Zoom meetings hosted by Davis staff. Every current Davis student will receive a copy of the book along with discussion questions that you may want to use at home as well as the dates and links for students to join the meetings.
MEDICAL FORMS
Dear Parents,
Looking ahead to the 2023-2024 school year, if your child requires medication or any action plans, your child will need new physician orders and action plans for the school year. Ideally have the physician date the forms following the last day of school. Forms can be found under health services on the D303.ORG website or linked directly here:
Students entering into kindergarten or 2nd grade will need a dental examination and form completed within 18 months of May 15th, 2024. Current 2nd grade students require a dental examination and form completed within 18 months of May 15th, 2023. A vision examination and form is also required for incoming kindergarten students as well as a physical examination and form.
These forms can be submitted to the main office or emailed to the school nurse at Peggy.Faught@d303.org. Please reach out if you have any questions. The health office direct line is 331-228-2204.
Thank you!

Summer Books
Sometime next week your child’s class will visit the library where they will have the opportunity to choose 5 books to add to their home library for summer reading. We are hoping they are as excited as we are to get fresh new books for summer!
Summer Reading
Summer is almost here. That means it’s time for the Summer Reading Bingo Challenge! To maintain your child’s reading growth from the school year, it is important they continue to read throughout the summer.
Your child will bring home a paper copy of the Summer Reading Bingo sheet before the end of this school year. The goal is for your child to complete 12 or more Bingo activities throughout the summer. When your child completes a bingo activity, cross it out and write a parent/guardian’s initials in the square.
In the fall, have your child return the Bingo sheet to their new classroom teacher, so they can receive a book and prize. Please write your child’s new teacher for the fall of the 2023-2024 school year in the top-right corner. Here is the link to the Summer Reading Bingo sheet in English and Spanish in case you need another copy. If you have questions, please contact Ms. Landells at tracie.landells@d303.org.
Additionally, the St. Charles Public Library offers a summer reading program. Click the link to find out more about their program. I encourage families to visit the St. Charles, Geneva, or other area libraries this summer. The Elgin and Schaumburg libraries are beautiful and worth a drive. Our public libraries offer many great programs and resources for all ages, and spending some time reading books at the library is a great way to spend time together. Happy reading!
5th Grade Clap Out
It is hard to believe that in one more week our 5th graders will be incoming 6th graders. We are so proud of all of the hard work they have put in this school year and are working on ways for us to celebrate their elementary years. We would love to extend an invitation to all of our fifth grade parents/families to our 5th grade clap out. This event will take place outdoors at Richmond school. Details below:
When: Friday, May 26, 2023
Time: Starts promptly at 2:20 p.m.
Parents:
Clap-out formation:
You may line up on the grass area indicated in blue in the chart below. 5th graders will start by coming out door #11 (closer to Oak and 12th street) and walk down 12th. They will walk up Indiana (greeted by 4th graders) and then enter door #2 where they will be greeted by our third graders inside. They will then go back to their classrooms until dismissal.
Reminders:
- We ask that you not hand your child gifts/balloons during the clap out. Please wait until after school for those items.
- If you plan on a change in transportation for the day, please notify the main office with advance notice, preferably before the last day of school.
- A lawn sign will be provided (Thank you PTO!!) in front of the school facing 12th street. Families are welcome to take pictures after school.
- If your child will be taking the bus home, balloons are not allowed on our buses as they impair vision of the driver.
- 5th grade classrooms will take class pictures during the day and those will be communicated via your child’s teacher.
We are looking forward to celebrating!
