Forms
Microsoft Forms is a great tool to use to for both formatives and summatives. It auto-grades multiple choice questions and allows you the opportunity to create constructed response questions as well. It provides wonderful data (color-coded charts and graphs) and allows you to provide just-in-time instruction. PLUS it saves time (you don't have to grade as much) and money (no paper). They also just came out with a "testing mode" screen lock to prevent students from going to other webpages or activities on their Surface.
*Many PLC's are already using Forms for formatives and summatives! If you would like to know how it's working for them ask 8th grade Math or 6th grade Social Studies.
Quizizz
Socrative
You can create quizzes in Microsoft Excel using a template or import quizzes shared by a colleague in Socrative.
Once a quiz is created, you can then administer it at a controlled pace or allow students to go at their own pace.
Plickers - for the low tech classroom
Have students work independently on a series of multiple-choice questions about a reading passage or a series of math problems, then poll the class and show a graph of the results.
EdPuzzle
EdPuzzle is one of my favorite tools. It gives teachers a set of tools to crop an existing online video to just the moments needed for a specific teaching purpose. Teachers can also customize the cropped video with voice-overs, audio comments, as well as embedded assessment questions. Crop any YouTube video. Download the EdPuzzle extension in Chrome and the EdPuzzle button will be nestled under every YouTube video you view. It's a great reminder.
Formative
Use Formative as your go-to tool for capturing students' responses in class or following at-home assignments. Start with the simple tutorial and experiment with the pre-made assignments to consider what might work best for your classroom. Make short multiple-choice questions to use as bell ringers or exit tickets to start or end your lesson.
Great for secondary teachers who want to upload their maps/formulas...
Other Ideas
Fast, right-or-wrong feedback is provided on kids' devices and the class screen. The multiple-choice quizzes may tend to favor memorization, but having kids create Kahoots allows for higher-order learning.
Kahoot! is one of the rare, great tools that you can learn about today and actually use tomorrow as a go-to formative assessment
Teachers access Kahoot @ Getakahoot.com
Students access Kahoot @ Kahoot.it
Quizalize
Quizalize is a student and teacher friendly site that allows users to quickly and efficiently assess their knowledge on content and analytical skills. Quizalize provides immediate feedback to players helping them to master both content and analytical skills. You can create your own quizzes, organize them in collections, or acquire previously created quizzes from its Marketplace. Quizalize is effective and engaging, a great resource to use for a quick-paced generation who is consistently eager for results.
Recap
At its core, Recap is a video response and reflection app that lets teachers and parents see how students learn. It provides insight into students’ grasp on curriculum and how they’re progressing through the learning process by introducing video as a quick, simple and everyday tool to collect student data. It even gives parents all the details that somehow never quite make it home with students.
Seesaw
Seesaw is a student-driven digital portfolio. Seesaw empowers students of any age to create, reflect, collaborate and share. Invite families to Seesaw to keep them in the loop about their child’s learning, and easily communicate between school and home.
