Hawks Happenings Monthly Newsletter
January 2021 Edition
Principal Message: Welcoming 2021!
Hello Hawks community,
I hope you have all had a wonderful Christmas and holiday season! I, like many of you, am very much looking forward to ringing in the new year.
At the time of this newsletter, an official date for our return to the hybrid in-person model has yet to be finalized. We are working on a return to in-person learning and hope to have some communication out to our parents and students as soon as possible on a specific return date. In the meantime, we will continue to have virtual remote learning with PM opportunities for students to be physically present on school grounds.
Our wonderful assistant principal Ms. Bryant, is leading our school efforts in providing academic interventions to support some of our most impacted students and until the official move to hybrid in-person learning, we will continue to offer PM supports here at the school for those who need it. If you feel like your student is struggling, but have not heard from their teachers or the school about attending PM in-person support, please feel free to contact us at 509-522-3312.
In other news, we wanted to make you aware of a new High School and Beyond platform we will be working with students on called "Naviance". This program has a robust college and career exploration feature that our counseling team will roll-out to the 8th-11th graders this year. Students will engage in lessons in their English classes periodically throughout the year in Naviance. A link to the program can be found on our website, but if you would like to explore some of it's features, please feel free to access it here. Link to Naviance.
I hope you enjoy the virtual Christmas Carol that our CPHS Drama Club put together. It is fun to see a virtual take on a holiday classic. In this newsletter, we also have information to share on our Media Communications class including the Trimester 1 spotlight video, information from Gear-Up on PSAT Test prep opportunities, and information on resources on wellness provided by our Trilogy partnership.
Enjoy the newsletter, and I look forward to seeing you all in the new year!

Course Highlight: Introduction to Media
One of our most sought after courses here at CPHS is our Introduction to Media CTE class. And while 2020 has sure made it challenging for Ms. Mebes and her students, they are doing some really cool and amazing things while remote.
The "Humans of CP" Media project was modeled after Brandon Stanton's Humans of New York.
This semester, 80 Intro to Media students were taught professional email communication, photography, professional interviewing for broadcast journalism and design.
Media students selected and scheduled a formal interview with another CPHS student.
Then they learned to compose a formal email to schedule the interview and to share the interview questions so the interviewee would be prepared. Media students were taught to add their newly earned titles of *Media Reporter* to their email signatures.
Reporters interviewed a student using skills taught to them such as the importance of exhibiting open body posture and nonverbal communication as an interviewer, researching the interviewee prior to the interview and the art of selecting open ended questions.
Students then learned how to take photographs that would visually tell the story of their Human of CP Interviewee. They planned out their photoshoots using newly honed skills of proactive planning taking into consideration needed props, weather, sun positioning other obstacles.
Reporters then transcribed the interview and wrote the story of their HOCP interviewee. Some stories will be used in the Talon Yearbook and this is a great honor to be published as a first year Media student. Reserve your Hawk a copy of the 2021 Talon Yearbook at www.jostensyearbooks.com
Students then took what they learned about their interviewee and designed a
Word Cloud and emailed it to their HOCP. They again used professional email communication to present the Word Cloud and then thanked the HOCP interviewee for their time and for agreeing to be spotlighted.
Media Reporters then took the information they learned about their HOCP and the photos they captured and learned to design HOCP spotlight flyers to be placed within the school.
Reporters then created Instagram posts to spotlight not only the HOCP but the professional quality work of the Media Reporter.
Even in this challenging time, our students are exhibiting creativity, digging deep and producing material that is high level and quality.

The Herron Project provides access to FitClub
All students in the CP community, please feel free to take advantage of this free resource available to all.
The Herren Project is providing access to their FitClub which is a resource for students to access: free guided meditations, goal setting and time-management workshops, nutritional workshops & cooking classes, and workout challenges. Their flyer is below.
Also, feel free to check out this resource courtesy of our Trilogy Services Partnership. This link to an online forum allows students and parents to engage with their peers around issues of substance use and related behaviors in their kids.

Trilogy Services shares the "Focus on You" Campaign
We also want to share with you the "Focus on You" campaign which is a public health campaign focused on adolescent alcohol use, and it mostly uses positive norms messaging, showing how many youth choose not to use alcohol and fighting the myth that "everyone does it".
