Media Center
Media Website and Lessons
Hello readers, coders and makers! I hope you enjoyed your spring break and took advantage of the beautiful weather by getting lots of fresh air. The Media Center has a site that gives you access to at home activities, ebooks, read alouds, online databases, optional lessons, and other helpful resources. Enjoy, and have some fun with the opportunities on this site! It is located at SMCPS Media Programs.
Black Eyed-Susan Progam
Voting is open for Maryland's Black-Eyed Susan Nominees. Many students worked hard to read the required books in order to participate in the 2020 voting. Students were required to read either 3 chapter books, 3 graphic novels and 8 picture books from the selection of nominated books. The plan was to have a voting party at school before the pandemic. I would still like the students that read the required books to have the opportunity to cast a vote. I will send an email to the individual students this week who qualified according to the BES cards they filled out in the media center. If your child already knows the categories they are allowed to vote in, then they can follow the BES voting link to cast their vote/s. Black Eyed-Susan 2020 Voting. All votes are due by May 25.
Breakout Box
The students love Breakout Box games when we play them in media. For those of you who are not familiar with a Breakout Box, it is very similar to an Escape Room but instead of solving puzzles to break out of a room you solve puzzles to break into a box. Breakout Edu has a Digital platform. The links below will take students to a digital Breakout game. I will post links to new games in a couple of weeks. Enjoy.
K/1st--- Danny Plays Putt-Putt
2nd/3rd--- Can I Have A Sleepover?
4th/5th--- Pet Shop Selection

Week 1 - Elements of Music Overview
Welcome to Week 1 of our Elements of Music unit! This week we will be introducing each of the seven elements of music. Please remember that these lessons and activities are recommended and not required.
Here is a link to this week’s lesson for grades K-2
Here is a link to this week’s lesson for grades 3-5
The Elements of Music are the building blocks of music. Without them, music would not exist. Think about the Elements of Music like parts of a bicycle. A bicycle needs pedals, a seat, handlebars, a chain, wheels, and a frame or it would not be a bicycle. Without the Elements of Music, music would not be music. Explore the Elements of Music by listening to musical excerpts and doing fun activities individually or as a family! Do you know what a didgeridoo is?

Hey kiddos! It’s Ms. Brown,
I just wanted to say I miss you all soooo much! I miss making music and growing with you all every week, and I miss seeing your faces!! I hope you are all staying healthy and safe at home and are having quality family time. I also hope you‘re remembering your love for music like I am and are practicing your instruments, whether it be your cello, violin, viola, bass, recorder, or voice! I miss being in the classroom with you all and I hope to start again soon!
Best Regards,
Ms. Brown
Art
First off, I would like to say how much I miss seeing all of you. I miss our conversations in class and in the hallways. I realize how lucky I am to teach every student at Duke and I truly am the most blessed art teacher in the county, as I get to teach the best students!
As a county, Art students have been suggested to complete weekly art boards. Any board can be done at any time. We are hoping you spend one hour a week on art. I do realize that you may or may not have the supplies needed to complete an activity, but there are a variety of activities and some do not require art specific materials. Please choose what you are able to do!
This week’s challenge, complete the Elements of Art Artboard. The elements of art consist of: Line, Shape, Texture, Color, Value, Space, and Form. These are the building blocks of art and these by themselves or in combination with each other are how art is created.
These sites can be also be accessed on google classroom through Clever. Just click on Google Classroom and then on Art.
Happy Creating and can’t wait for you to share!
