Brunswick Buzz: Brunswick Area Teen Center
On this month's podcast, Phil talks with Stacy Frizzle-Edgerton, Executive Director of the Brunswick Area Teen Center. The Teen Center provides opportunities for students in the Brunswick School Department and the greater Brunswick community, a place to go outside of school where they can have fun and feel safe. The Teen Center is a central place where young people like our students can meet safely to explore creative outlets, share their talents, participate in intergenerational activities, and develop into well-rounded adults.

Superintendent's Notebook: Addressing Absenteeism Takes a Team Effort
"I love the vibe of a bustling school hallway. Conversations bounce from an upcoming math quiz to what’s for lunch to who’s going to the big game on Friday night. Students have an energy and enthusiasm when they are talking with their peers that you don’t find anywhere else.
Sadly, many of our young people are missing out on this important experience.
According to the most current data available from the state, 1 out of 5 students was chronically absent in the 2020-21 school year. Chronic absenteeism is defined as missing more than 10% of school days with excused or unexcused reasons. That’s just two days a month. Even here in the Brunswick School Department, absenteeism rates have increased.
The extraordinary challenges provided by the pandemic understandably impacted student attendance, but the absentee rate was already high prior to the pandemic, with 1 in 6 students considered chronically absent."

Read Across America
The National Education Association's Read Across America is the nation's largest celebration of reading! Every year students celebrate the birthday of Dr. Seuss to encourage reading. On March 2nd, students at Kate Furbish Elementary School had guest readers stop by to read their favorite books to various classrooms.
Thank you to all of our volunteer readers!
Colors Week at KFS & HBS

Help Alleviate School Nutrition Debt
Please DONATE
The Brunswick School Department is looking to alleviate school nutrition debt for families in our community. Prior to the pandemic, families in the Brunswick community had accumulated $7,000 in debt from unpaid lunch bills. We would like to relieve the stress from those families and take care of the payment for them. This is where we need your help! We're looking to not only fundraise for the $7,000 owed to the school nutrition program, but we would like to keep the fundraising going and provide cold milk for all students throughout the remainder of the school year.
The Maine Department of Education has funded free school lunches to all students throughout the 2022-2023 school year. However, what is not funded is cold milk for those students that choose to bring their lunches from home. We would like to have cold milk equally accessible to all students, and with your support, we could make this a reality for the Brunswick community.
If interested in donating, please scan the QR code or visit https://givebutter.com/foodservicerelief
Every little bit helps and goes directly to help families in our community.
We appreciate your support.
With Gratitude,
Brunswick School Department
Thank you to those that have already donated! We've raised
just over $4,800 to help school nutrition debt.
