Miles Elementary Dress and Grooming
The district’s dress code teaches grooming and hygiene, prevents disruption, minimizes safety hazards, and maintains a positive learning climate. Students and parents may determine a student’s personal dress and grooming standards, provided that they comply with the following:
· SHORTS, PANTS, DRESSES: Shorts are to be worn at the waist. No “saggy” pants are allowed. Dresses and shorts may not be shorter than fingertip length. This will be measured with the student’s shoulders relaxed, arms straight to the sides, and the palm of the hand flat on the outside of the leg, and the clothing may not be shorter than the longest fingertip. No shorts may be rolled. Wind shorts will be measured from the top of the slit on the side of the shorts and shall be dark colors. No biker, boxer, or cut-offs are allowed.
· A bare midriff, including the back, is not acceptable.
· Headgear (hats, do-rags, caps, etc.) may not be worn in the building by any student.
· Shoes must be appropriate for P.E. and recess.
· The hair shall be clean, well-groomed, and natural color. Hair may not be bleached. Hair shall not obstruct vision. The hair shall not have designs cut into the sides of the head of any kind.
· Mohawks are not allowed.
· Male students shall not wear earrings. Visible piercing of the body (other than the ear of female students) is not acceptable. Miles Elementary Student Handbook Page 48 of 90
· No form-fitting exercise clothing may be worn by any student.
· Appropriate undergarments shall be worn at all times and shall not show. K,1,2,3 girls must wear shorts under dresses – no exceptions.
· Muscle shirts and tank tops are not acceptable for any student. When in doubt, the three-finger rule should be applied. No revealing apparel will be permitted. Sheer fabrics or see-through materials without proper underclothing will not be permitted.
· Any apparel or clothing which promotes violence, states a “put-down,” displays risqué prints, vulgar or suggestive language or design of drug, alcohol, or tobacco advertisements will not be allowed.
· No pajama bottoms are to be worn.
· Any other attire or grooming that is perceived by the administration, as being detrimental to the education process will not be allowed.
· Students may not wear unusual costumes that attract attention and detract from the learning atmosphere.
· Sunglasses may not be worn in the building.
If the principal determines that a student’s grooming or clothing violates the school’s dress code, the student will be given an opportunity to correct the problem at school and return to the classroom. If the problem cannot be corrected at school, the principal will work with the student and parent to obtain an acceptable change of clothing for the student in a way that minimizes the loss of instructional time. Repeated or severe offenses may result in more serious disciplinary action in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct.
