Corona High School - A Tradition of Excellence Since 1896
Greetings, Panther Families!
With Fall right around the corner, it's a reminder that we are almost halfway through the semester and Winter Break will be here before we know it. Help us keep all our students focused on their academics and reach out to us for any additional support we can provide.
Another reminder is that this is our full accreditation year and we need your input (follow this link for some FAQs about WASC: https://www.acswasc.org/wasc/frequently-asked-questions/). We will have a visiting committee (VC) comprised of 8 volunteer educators that will validate our strengths and growth areas. They will determine the length of our accreditation, which validates the diplomas we issue to our graduates. A critical component of this process is to have parent input in the self-study report that we write up and submit prior to the visit. Our first parent input meeting will be held on Tuesday, October 1st in our library begining at 6:30 pm. Because light refreshments will be provided, along with some materials, please RSVP to Mrs. Maffucci (rmaffucci@cnusd.k12.ca.us) or Ms. Vega (cvega@cnusd.k12.ca.us). Your participation in this process is extremely valuable, so thank you in advance for your participation.
PLEASE NOTE: There will be NO SCHOOL on Friday, September 27th! This is a non-student attendance day to allow our staff to undergo professional development.
Proud Principal,
Antonio Gonzalez, Ed.D.

Engineering
Earlier this week our Engineering students tested their AGV (automated guided vehicle). The challenge was to build a dump truck vehicle that can follow a line, stop at intersections, dump the load at a predetermined point, turn around and return to the starting point...all without any human involvement. Students programmed their own AGVs with much success!
Health Careers Pathway (HCP)
Our HCP seniors had the opportunity to tour Riverside City College's athletic training facilities and were also able to meet their athletic trainer, Todd Babcock. This trip was intended to give our students genuine exposure to opportunities that exist beyond high school.
AVID
AVID held our first "Fun Fitness Friday" today (September 20th). Students rotated through five fitness stations included activities such as jump rope, yoga, ultimate frisbee, and some cardio exercises. This is part of AVID's campaign to promote a healthier lifestyle amongst our students.

Athletics
Fall Sports
Football: Our Panthers traveled to Victorville to take on Silverado High School and came home with an exciting victory! Tonight we travel the opposite direction to take on Rancho Christian in Murrieta. Good luck! Be aware that we will have bye next week, so our following game will be October 4th at home against Roosevelt High School to open Big VIII play. That will also be a black out game, so come on out and wear your black!
Cross Country: Elisa Huerta placed first on September 18th at Andulka Park during the Big VIII Cluster Meet! She is looking to make a return trip to the post-season this year!
Girls Volleyball: After placing third last weekend at the Visalia Tournament, we opened up Big VIII league play at home against Roosevelt, but fell short of the victory. The team bounced back with a thrilling come-from-behind win at Centennial in five sets.
Girls Golf: Our girls lost a really close one on Thursday to Ramona High School, 270 to 267 (remember that in golf, the lower score wins). This was our best score this year, with personal bests by Aisha Randhawa, Leah Hellerud, Ari Castro, and Lourdes Lara. A promising season lies ahead for our Panthers!
Boys Water Polo: We celebrated Senior Night ahead of league play on September 18th as we hosted Palm Desert High School. Although our three-game winning streak ended, we still celebrated our five seniors (Andrew Burke, Drew Heaston, Eli Sesma, Shane McGregor, and Brendon Ballesteros) who will be providing their leadership the rest of the season!

Girls Wrestling: With all the success our program has experienced in recent years, this upcoming season brings with it high expectations and a team that is ready for the challenge. Our Lady Panthers wrestling team has worked very hard in the off-season in preparation to make another run for the CIF and State Title. Captains Jasmin Garcia, Miranda Koppi, Solana Mottola, and Madyson Dow are leading the way for these special ladies. Among Varsity we have 4 National All-Americans and 5 ranked in the top 20 in California. They continue to put in the work and make us very proud in everything they do, on the mat and in the class room.

Suicide Prevention Awareness Month
- World Suicide Prevention Day: Working Together to Prevent Suicide was observed on September 10th: A time to reach out to those affected by suicide, raise awareness, and to connect with those who are having suicidal ideation to treatment services. It’s important to make sure individuals who have been affected by a suicide loss have access to the resources they need. September is National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month which assists in sharing resources and awareness around the issues of suicide prevention. Although it is extremely important to address this year-round, this month highlights these issues and provides a time for mental health advocates, prevention organizers, survivors, allies, and community members to come together and unite to promote suicide awareness. According to the Jason Foundation, which is dedicated to the prevention of the “Silent Epidemic” of youth suicide through educational and awareness programs that equip young people, educators/youth workers and parents with the tools and resources to help identify and assist at-risk youth, shared that suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death for our youth ages 10-24 (2016, CDC WISQARS) http://jasonfoundation.com/
- Counselors, teachers, administration, clerks, custodians, parents, adults, and friends are in a key position to notice signs and to reach out to get help. Awareness and education are the first steps to prevention. Suicide is preventable.
It is important to know the Warning Signs:
- Threats or comments about killing themselves, also known as suicidal ideation, can begin with seemingly harmless thoughts like “I wish I wasn’t here” but can become more overt and dangerous
- Increased alcohol and drug use
- Aggressive behavior
- Social withdrawal from friends, family and the community
- Dramatic mood swings
- Talking, writing or thinking about death
- Impulsive or reckless behavior
- Giving away important possessions
- Feeling unbearable pain (emotional pain or physical pain)
- Talk about being a burden to others
