Ag Mech (Welding)
First-year students in Ag Mech (Welding) have completed their OSHA certifications and transitioned into the shop to practice oxy-fuel cutting. Second and third-year students are applying their skills toward projects (I see an offset smoker in the near future) and also learning more about career opportunities through guest speakers and job fairs.
Culinary Arts
First-year students in Culinary Arts have earned their Food Handler's Licenses and begun developing their knife and measurement skills. Second and third-year students have begun internships with Our Shared Kitchen & Kimchi Rok while also taking time to perfect recipes for the Travis County Youth Show competition. Our Culinary Arts program is also excited for the return of in-person Friday luncheons in addition to our curbside service.
Early Learning
First-year students in Early Learning are focusing on their communication and advocacy skills while second and third-year students are participating in internships at Child Inc. and Pecan Springs Elementary School. Our Early Learning students are also responsible for our campus-wide No Place for Hate Activities, kicking off the year by unpacking the language in our Resolution of Respect.
Health Science
First-year Health Science students are learning about different career clusters within the healthcare field. Second and third-year students are diving deeper into the role of the medical assistant and examining legal and ethical issues on the job. We are finalizing our internship and hospital rotations with our district CTE department. In the meantime, our students will be touring different medical offices and facilities to gain exposure to a variety of opportunities, as well as hosting guest speakers from the industry.
Hospitality
First-year students in Hospitality are learning about the different industries within hospitality and tourism as well as completing their Food Handler's Licenses. Students across all years in the program are putting their customer service and event planning skills to practice through our Friday luncheons, with second-year students taking on leadership roles. We're also excited for new connections with Austin Hotel & Lodging Association and Visit Austin.
Plant Science
First-year students in Plant Science are focusing on workplace safety and learning how to manage our garden beds while second and third-year students are taking ownership of our upcoming Winter Poinsettia Sale (see below). This semester, our students have also learned about careers and opportunities with Austin Park Rangers, Austin Civilian Conservation Corps, and ABC Home & Commercial Services. We're excited for upcoming lessons with Partners for Education Agriculture & Sustainability (PEAS) funded by the Urban Forestry Grant.
Career Prep
In addition to participating in internships twice per week, 12th-grade students in our Career Prep classes are already diving into resumes and interview skills. Students have attended two career fairs and showcases through Texas Workforce Solutions to put their skills to use and increase comfort around networking and communication. Students are also learning about the logistics that come with adulthood.
Transition
The Transition Program at Clifton is new pilot for the district serving 12th-grade students and IEP continuers. These courses address career exploration and employability skills that are applicable across a range of careers. During the first nine weeks, students have gained familiarity with different jobs within the hospitality industry. They are applying skills across our campus and in the community and recently started their first internship rotation at Dollar Tree.
