On Love - Rev. Mary Gear
When the power of love overcomes the love of power, the world will know peace.
~Jimi Hendrix
These seem like challenging times, and it can be hard to hold on to the hope that the power of love can overcome the love of power. Yet, Unitarian Universalism is a faith the puts love at the center.
For several years, congregations in the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA), which includes OUUC, have been in conversation about how we articulate our purpose and covenant with each other. It is Article II of the UUA Bylaws that expresses our purpose and values, and there has been an Article II Commission working on leading this discussion and capturing the results.
You can learn more about the Article II Commission here and more about the entire process, including OUUC’s conversations, here.
One of the results of this reflection is a set of six core UU values with Love at the center. This year at OUUC, we are exploring each core value as our monthly spiritual themes. In November and December, we explored “Generosity” and “Transformation.” In February it will be “Justice," in March “Equity,” in April “Interdependence,” and in May it will be “Pluralism.” This month, our spiritual theme is “Love.”

In its final report issued in October 2023, the Article II Commission defined each of the six values, but didn’t define the value at the center of our faith: Love. Instead, the Values and Covenant section of Article II begins with these words:
As Unitarian Universalists, we covenant, congregation-to-congregation and through our Association, to support and assist one another in our ministries. We draw from our heritages of freedom, reason, hope, and courage, building on the foundation of love.
Love is the power that holds us together and is at the center of our shared values. We are accountable to one another for doing the work of living our shared values through the spiritual discipline of Love.
What does it mean to center Love? What is the spiritual discipline of love? I think the Commission left it up to us to decide how we manifest love in this world, as individuals and as a faith community.
This coming Sunday, I’ll share my thoughts on Love and invite you to join the after-service forum to share your thoughts in small group discussions. What do you think Love is and what do you think it would mean to center love?
As we move into this new year, may we center the powerful force of love.
Blessings on your week,
Rev. Mary
