District Update - March 26
Superintendent's Message
As this is the last newsletter prior to Spring Break, I would like to take this opportunity to wish Middie Nation a wonderful week away.
We all need a bit of downtime, and I hope you will be able to set aside some time to rest, relax and recharge with friends and family – even if just for a few moments. It’s important to take time when we need it and to reward yourself for the work you do. All those who have contributed to the success of Midview Local Schools and our students these last few months have certainly earned a reward! Spring Break is April 3-10, and students will return to learning on Tuesday, April 11.
We also start our required state testing soon. Please use this link to review our testing schedule - State Testing. Each year our teachers and principals work hard to assess our students throughout the year to get a real representation of where our students are in regard to our state standards, and I believe our staff does an amazing job of preparing our students.
Remember that state testing is one measure we use as a school district and while we do not spend our days prepping for these tests, it is important to remember that they can be long and difficult days for students. Please try and help your child(ren) get a good night's rest so they are not overly tired. Another good thing is to try and have some outdoor fun, if the weather cooperates.
If you have questions about testing, please do not hesitate to contact your building principal. Have a great Spring Break, and let us all return ready to finish the school year strong!
Take care,
Dr. Willingham
Voter Registration Deadline Approaching
Your vote can make a difference. It's important that those who believe in, are a part of, or witness the good work of our district, exercise their right to vote. Registering to vote or ensuring your registration is up-to-date is simple! To participate in the May 2 election, registration must be completed or updated by April 3.
If you need to register to vote:
- Register to vote online, in person, or by mail!
If you have moved or changed your name recently:
- If you are already registered to vote but have moved within Ohio and/or changed your name, you must update your voter registration by submitting a new voter registration form.
If you need to check your voter information:
- Perform this kind of search before the deadline to register to vote so that in the event that the board of elections did not receive your information, or if it is not accurate, you have time to submit a new form before the deadline
Informational Facebook Live Event
Whether you feel you need more information to make an informed decision, would like specific details to share with others, or just simply have a few questions, please consider attending this upcoming informational session about the May 2 substitute levy.
- April 12 | Facebook Live Event | 7 PM
Dr. Willingham will cover the facts of the levy, address frequently asked questions, and answer your live questions!
Success, Updates & Quick Bits
MHS Senior Wins National Award for Photography
MHS senior Sesen Keith received a REGIONAL and NATIONAL Gold Key medal from Scholastic for one of her photographs!
The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards draw entries from across the United States and Canada. This year, over 300,000 works of art and writing were submitted. About 40,000 students received regional recognition, and 2,000 works earned national awards. Only students with regional Gold Key work can advance to the national level for a Gold Key, Silver Key, or no award. Sesen's photography is one of nearly 800 National Gold Key winners and one of 33 from Ohio.
National Gold Key winners and their educators will be celebrated during a ceremony at New York City's Carnegie Hall in June. Sesen's artwork will also feature in a traveling show through New York, D.C., and other locations and will be published in Scholastic's annual Best Teen Art book.
Midview High School Honors New NHS Inductees
The purpose of National Honor Society (NHS) is to inspire students to uphold and maintain its four pillars - scholarship, service, leadership, and character - as a precedent for not only inducted members but also as a model for the entire student body. Midview High School’s 66th NHS induction ceremony celebrated the accomplishments of the following students:
- Class of 2023: Lilly Armold, Garrett Backus, Trevor Block, Joseph Pozda, Makenna Ruoff
- Class of 2024: Grace Burdorff, Andrew DiFranco, Olivia DiFranco, Kate Dolin, Kalen Dougall, Ashley Etzel, Katelynn Farr, Elizabeth Filipiak, Grace Henely, Curissa Keating, Austin Kretovics, Claire McKinney, Joey Melendez, Ishan Patel, Samantha Pebworth, Charles Pinter, Norah Sgro, Zak Shinnawi, Alana Stacey, Ashley Stevenson, Lily Tomasheski, and Bobbi Wervey
To be nominated for Midview’s NHS, candidates must be either a junior (Spring eligibility only) or senior (Fall and Spring eligibility) and maintain the scholarship baseline of at least a 3.5 cumulative GPA. If invited to apply for membership, candidates must also:
prove completion of eight service hours from the current academic year.
request sponsorship from five individuals who may attest to the student's participation in service and leadership activities outside of academics.
achieve high ratings in charter assessment (including, but not limited to, behavior, timeliness, honesty, integrity, discipline, and flexibility both inside and outside the academic environment) from the academic faculty at MHS.
Cleveland Browns Share Smoothies with MMS
American Dairy Association (ADA) Mideast, with the support of the Cleveland Browns, works in schools to promote healthy eating and physical activity!
Some special guests (Cleveland Browns Roderick Perry and Chomps) joined us on campus Tuesday to thank our Food Service team for all their hard work and to celebrate the Smoothie Immersion Blender Kits our buildings received through the ADA Mideast Smoothie Program grant!
Midview’s Food Service Team can now make large batches of nutritious and delicious smoothies with yogurt, milk, and fruit.
Seussical the Musical
North and West students ended Wednesday on a high note with a special showing of 'Seussical the Musical' and a popcorn snack! Their overall rating? Thumbs UP!
MHS Drama Department's production of 'Seussical the Musical' premiered Friday, followed by additional showings on Saturday night and Sunday afternoon! In addition to the show, families enjoyed concessions, basket raffles, a 50/50, and an art showing of Dr. Seuss-inspired works by Midview elementary students!
From learning their lines to perfecting their costumes and set, our MHS Drama Department spent countless hours preparing a wonderful show for our community to enjoy. Their talent truly shined bright on the stage.
6th Grade Students Participate in Math Contest
Earlier this month, thirty-four East 6th-graders traveled to Strongsville Middle School to participate in the 2023 Greater Cleveland Council of Teachers of Mathematics Grades 6-8 Problem-Solving Contest. Students have been practicing for the competition since January. They competed in four timed rounds: 6 places to start, Mental Math, Hurdles, and the Pile. After the competition, students enjoyed chocolate chip cookies and an awards ceremony. Everyone did a great job representing Midview, and we are so proud of their efforts!
