It's Christmas time in the jungle, and Jim just can't get into the holiday spirit. Then Jim eats a "festive" green banana that makes him feel sick. Now everything seems worse. What is the Black-Eyed Susan Book Award?
The Black-Eyed Susan Book Award is a student choice award for the state of Maryland that has been awarded each year since 1992. The award seeks to promote literacy and lifelong reading habits by encouraging students to read quality, contemporary literature.
Reading committees of school and public librarians, and other interested members of the Maryland Association of School Librarians (MASL) meet to determine which books will be nominated and placed on student reading lists.
β¨In the spring, students can participate in a March Madness style book tournament if students have read at least 3 novels/graphic novels and 10 picture books. Encourage your child to start early on the booklist as they will select our schools' most popular reads this year!

The Pig War: How a Porcine Tragedy Taught England and America to Share β Emma Bland Smith (Author)
Here is a true story of how the great nations of America and England almost went to war in 1859 over a pigβbut learned to share instead.
In 1859, the British and Americans coexist on the small island of San Juan, located off the coast of the Pacific Northwest. They are on fairly good termsβuntil one fateful morning when an innocent hog owned by a British man has the misfortune to eat some potatoes on an American farmer's land. In a moment of rash anger, Lyman Cutlar shoots Charles Griffin's pig, inadvertently almost bringing the two nations to war. Tensions flare, armies gather, cannons are rolled out . . . all because of a pig!
Emma Bland Smith's humorous text in this whimsical nonfiction book models the principles of peaceful conflict resolution.

The Disney+ series debuts on Dec. 20 with a two-episode premiere, followed by new episodes weekly.
Fans of Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson novels have a lot to look forward to. Almost a decade after the second and final installment of the film series premiered in theaters, the books are being adapted for a Disney+ series, Percy Jackson and the Olympians.
The eight-episode series will premiere Dec. 20 on Disney+ with a two-episode premiere, followed by new episodes weekly.
This time around, Riordan is intimately involved with the adaptation's production; the author revealed in a blog post that he serves as executive producer, co-writing the pilot episode and creating a series bible for the series with co-showrunner Jonathan E. Steinberg, as well as planning the plot for the first season and creating ideas for potential future seasons. So now, fans are not only getting a second chance at fully immersing themselves in Riordan's magical world, but they're doing so with the author's full permission!
