7th Grade 3rd Quarter Newsletter
January 12, 2024
Stay Up-to-Date with our Classrooms!
Staying connected to our families is important to our teachers. In addition to the front page of our Canvas courses, we are excited to share this quarterly newsletter with our families to keep you aware of upcoming events, activities, lessons, units, and materials from our classes! We are transitioning to a quarterly update to keep you in the loop on content we anticipate covering this quarter. The 7th Grade Team has compiled this newsletter to share some of the upcoming experiences your student will be having with us. As always, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact your child's teachers! As a reminder, 2nd Quarter report cards were sent home with students Friday, January 12.
7th Grade Electives
Art
Band
Choir
We have begun this semester with a staggering 53 choir members. We are beginning our new music, which centers around Popular styles. Students will be singing Bruno Mars, songs from “Matilda the Musical”, and Toto. Students will also be engaging in more music theory by doing daily sightreadings, vocabulary, and reflections. Mark your calendars for our next concert which is February 23rd at 6:30 PM. Hope to see you there!
Engineering
We’ve got a new group of students in engineering, and it’s been a pleasure getting to connect and learn about each other in the first few days of class. We’re excited to start our first project: spaghetti towers! Students will work in pairs to design the tallest tower given very limited materials. Topics include brainstorming, objective decision making, structural strategies, and outside-the-box thinking!
PE and Wellness
Technology
Welcome to an all-new semester of technology! This month, students will be working through a Photoshop-esque program in order to learn professional image modification techniques. They’ll also be learning about how to find reliable websites to do research for a creative project that involves inventing their own candy brand!
7th Grade Core Classes
ELA
As we move into the second semester, we are excited to welcome Miss Tessa Bickford to our classroom. Miss Bickford is a student teacher from Otterbein University and will be with us through April. We are excited about the new perspective she will bring to our class.
We are coming to the end of our focus on Chasing Lincoln’s Killer and will conclude with different explanatory writing opportunities based in real-world situations.
From here, we will journey into argumentative writing combined with historical fiction. As a class, we will read Fever 1793 by Laurie Halse Anderson, which takes us back to the Philadelphia Yellow Fever epidemic of 1793. It relates eerily to recent history and provides a fantastic opportunity to combine more exploration of historical documents as we read a fictional account of the time. Additionally, students will participate in Historical Fiction book clubs based on time periods and themes rather than titles, providing students with different perspectives on the historical periods explored in their novels.
Once again, students will have access to the whole class text through Canvas using PDF and read-aloud. Parents are welcome to join us as we travel back in time to before Philly became the capital of cheesesteaks and was, instead, the capital of the United States of America.
Mrs. Heinig's Classes
We have been reading about nonfiction topics that the students have chosen. Our ELA focus is to show the kids that the skills they are developing--reading, researching, writing, and then putting together an engaging presentation in order to TEACH something--are real-life skills that real people use for real purposes. We are adding text features to our writing in order to make the presentations captivating, educational, and attractive to the audience for which we prepared it. We will close out the unit learning from our classmates’ presentations. We will also learn from parents who live and work in our community as they give presentations they have used in their places of employment. We will have parents representing Link Proerty Management, DWL Architects, Nationwide Insurance, Jonathan Alder Local Schools, Ohio State Highway Patrol, and Sugar and Bise Baking Co.
We are almost ready to start the most charged unit of the year--our Debate and Argument Unit #4. We will:
perform research using online sources to make and support claims
develop organization in an argumentative essay
think critically about the topic
trace and evaluate the argument and specific claims in a text
follow rules for collegial discussions, track progress toward specific goals, and define individual roles.
present claims and findings in a focused, coherent manner with pertinent descriptions
delineate a speaker’s argument, evaluating the soundness of the reasoning and the relevance and sufficiency of the evidence.
In other words, we will learn that it is important to have an opinion, be able to support your opinion with facts, and express your opinion in a manner that allows for civil discourse, be a good listener, and produce excellent writing.
Math
Math 7
In Math 7, we finished Module 7 over inequalities this week and will be moving on to Module 8. This module will cover many topics within geometry such as angle relationships, cross sections, and the triangle inequality theorem. Our Module 8 Assessment is currently scheduled for February 1st but this may change. After this, we will finish up our geometry topics in Module 9. This module covers the area of geometric figures, volume, and surface area. Reminder, students have a weekly Aleks assignment that is due each Sunday.
Math 7+
Math 7+ is rounding out our algebra Module 7. We have covered solving one, two, and multi-step equations & inequalities along with split-variable equations from the 8th-grade standards. Our assessment is scheduled for Wednesday, January 17th. Students will also spend some time learning about slope and systems of equations through graphing in Module 8. As we approach Module 9 in February, students will dive into the Probability standards (Module 9) and explore Sampling and Statistics (Module 10). Reminder, students have a weekly Aleks assignment that is due each Sunday.
Science
Students in science just finished studying the Periodic Table. Lab groups explored the characteristics of graphite, zinc, and copper in a hands-on lab. Every student was assigned a different element, and they researched and created a digital slide show about that element. They even tried to decode an Alien Periodic Table for candy. Next, students will be identifying chemical and physical changes in a lab that promises to be mildly explosive. (Baking soda and vinegar). In the third quarter, we will also cover water on earth including oceans, freshwater, water underground, and ocean currents.
Social Studies
7th Grade social studies classes are finishing up their unit on the Roman Empire! Students are currently studying what daily life was like during the Pax Romana and will be moving on soon to study the birth and spread of Christianity in the Roman Empire. Finally, we will close our largest unit by investigating the factors that led to Rome’s collapse. Students will learn about these final topics in a variety of ways including Virtual Reality experiences, STEM challenges, collaborative group work, independent research, and whole- class discussions. Finally, our unit will draw to a close with students crafting a full argumentative essay focused on the fall of Rome.
Common Sense Media
Common Sense Media is an online tool that can help parents and students make informed decisions regarding media use. This tool can be used for many types of media, including books, movies, video games, and apps. Additionally, the “Parent Tips and FAQ” section can provide families with valuable support on facilitating social media, cell phone, and screen time use with their child.
