Business Math
Our 6th grade, Blue Heron Class, just wrapped up their Business Math block! Ms. James brought to the class the many aspects of a start-up business and the math related to those tasks, from budgeting and profit margins to supply and demand . The block culminated with each student presenting to the class an innovative product or business they developed in the form of a pitch to investors, which we (and the students!) are excited to share with you here. Thank you, Blue Herons and Ms. James!

Dear Siskiyou School Parents,
With this week we are starting the 2nd semester! This semester looks and feels so different than the first. It’s a different time of year, different seasons, different celebrations and events, and the children will change and grow so much between now and the end of the year.
It’s been so wonderful to see what is happening in the classrooms: First, a fantastic 7th grade play which I hope everyone got to see, beautiful watercolor paintings displayed in the front hallway, the 6th grade’s completion of their business math projects (see below) and the middle school Friday program with all it’s wonderful offerings. Last week Chinese was wrapped up in classes 1-5 and Seniora Diez is now teaching Spanish in all the grades for the rest of the year. This Friday we will celebrate the New Lunar Chinese Year with Jennifer Carroll. She will guide the 5th grade students in a Chinese puppet show; we can’t wait to see the story.
As the gifts of Waldorf education keep inspiring and fulfilling the teachers, the kids are met beautifully every day. Please join us, when you can, for our monthly tours. You will get to see main lessons being taught in grades 1-8 and we always make a brief stop by the kindergarten as well. Check the calendar below to see when the tours are scheduled; usually it’s the first Thursday of each month. Please also encourage neighbors and friends to attend; it’s always helpful to get the word out about our school in the larger community.
Please see the traditional verse for grades 1-4 by Rudolf Steiner below. Children around the globe in all Waldorf schools will recite this verse in their language every morning of the school day.
The Sun with loving light
Makes bright for me each day,
The soul with spirit power
Gives strength unto my limbs,
In sunlight shining clear
I revere, oh spirit,
The strength of humankind,
Which thee so graciously
Has planted in my soul,
That I with all my might,
May love to work and learn.
From Thee stream light and strength
To Thee rise love and thanks.
Warmly, Aurilia

Conference Childcare
We’re excited to be able to offer childcare for conferences! Childcare will be available from 8:00 to 4:00 on Thursday and 8:00 to 2:00 on Friday. Children stay free during your conference time, beyond that time childcare is $10/hour (cash or check only please).
From Our Parent Handbook:
There are three required parent-teacher conferences each year: mid-October, mid-February, and late May. These conferences are always held on the Thursday and Friday of conference week. Parents are expected to be available on the designated Thursday or Friday rather than asking to schedule a conference on another day. The Thursday and Friday conference days are NO SCHOOL days for students so that class teachers can give their full attention to the parents. Conference sign-up sheets go up online two weeks prior. Parents with more than one child in the school are encouraged to sign up as soon as the signup sheets are posted to get back-to-back time slots with their children’s teachers and avoid having to make several trips into school. Teachers ask divorced parents to attend conferences together so that both parents or sets of parents hear the same thing at the same time. In cases where it is not possible, parents should contact the class teacher to see if an accommodation can be made. Two times a year, 5th-8th parents also sign up to meet with their child’s math and language arts teachers on those Thursday-Friday conference days. Conferences with class teachers last a half hour. Conferences with the subject teachers are 15 minutes.
Singing Valentines
Help support the 8th Grade with their fundraising for their end of the year trip, while at the same time warming the heart of a friend or a loved one. Forms are now available and orders will be available until Friday, February 9th. The cost is $20 which includes a friend or loved one being serenaded to on Valentine’s Day and receiving a card and a bar of chocolate. This is an annual tradition for the 8th grade class and our community, and you can really make someone’s day!
Also available, online valentines! Send your out-of-town loved one a cheery greeting from the Dragonfly class via email. The emailed valentine will include a music video of one of the students' favorite songs. See the link below to order.
Looking for Wool Roving
Class 2 is looking for donations of any spare roving you may have to share for wet felting for their auction project! There is a bin at the front office for any bits and ends that you may have left over and would like to find a new home for. We would be grateful for any little amount you have to drop off for us to repurpose into our project!
Cheers, Alicia (Class 2 Parent Rep)
Parking Issues
Parents, please make sure you are being good neighbors to all our friends on Clay Street and in our nearby neighborhoods. Please do not block driveways, mailboxes, or move trash cans. Thank you!
Class 1 - Ms. McKissick
Exciting things are happening in first grade this week! We’ve added an extra period every day, and our new dismissal time is 2:50. We’ll have Spanish, Games, and Reading classes now. We dive back into fairytales, and begin reading, and writing in earnest. Ms. A drew the blackboard drawing for one of my favorite stories: “The Lion and the Gypsy”!

Chess Club Update
Hello everyone. This is the first in what will be a weekly update from the Chess Club world.
We have met the last two Fridays, and have a pretty good group of students from across the grades.
There are a number of brand new-to-chess players, so we have taken the time to introduce all the pieces, review their movements, and now are beginning to learn more principles and guidelines around their best uses. We have gone over the basic rules, what constitutes a draw or stalemate, check and checkmate, exchange values, the rarely used but important to know 'en passant', and the ins and outs of castling.
A typical Chess Club will begin with some end game puzzles for the students to solve while the students snack and we wait for everyone to arrive. Next is a review of topics covered the previous week, and an introduction to some new material. The focus in the next few Fridays will be origins and history of the game and the evolution of the pieces, hints and strategies, tactics, as well as starting to look at some specific openings. Obviously each student will absorb different pieces from all of this, depending on their level of play and understanding of the game. But, no matter where they are in their development, I think it's a great life skill to begin to cultivate.
If your child still wants to join us, we meet on Friday's from 12:30 -1:45. Starting this week we will be meeting in Pine Hall instead of the Math Room.
Please email me if you would still like to sign up - - dustin.monda@siskiyouschool.org
