Room 217 Updates
Open House
It was so nice to meet so many families at Open House last night! If you weren't able to make it, please look for the notices coming home with your child. There is a school/ family compact, a technology agreement and a notice from the PTO. Also, please complete my brief survey and check out our classroom website. Our website will contain great links to support learning, downloads, student work samples and how-to videos explaining some of the educational games we play to build our skills.
Card Games
This week we've played Memory and Top It in math. The cards we are using are a mix of pictures of base ten blocks, the standard (246) and expanded notation (200+40+6) of numbers. Students have been doing a great job proving the value of picture cards by "tapping them out." Ask your child how!
A-Z Readers
We have read two great A-Z books! First, we read What Lives in that Hole, a nonfiction book about animals that burrow underground. Next we read Grounded to Earth, about Zorb, an alien whose behavior gets him grounded... to Earth.
Building, Decomposing and Comparing
Not only have students been working with actual base ten blocks during math, but they've also been doing a great job recording their thinking. Let your child show you how using the resources in the manipulatives pouch our OWL books.
Ready?
Find our specialist schedule in the OWL book so you're always prepared! Whether you're returning a library book or remembering to wear sneakers on PE day, this schedule will keep you organized.
Set?
When it's time to practice reading a "just right" book in school or at home, you are all set! The back cover of your OWL book keeps these important books within reach.
Learn!
This pouch will store word cards, math fact cards, manipulatives and ear buds. In school and at home, you will be able to make every minute count, as you reach for your learning goals.
Can You Help?
Earbuds
I would love for each child to have their own earbuds in their manipulatives pouch at all times. Students will use them at the listening center and sometimes when doing work on their Chromebooks.
Snack Bags, Paper Towels
Snack size zipper bags help us organize game cards and manipulatives. Donations of these and paper towels, which help us keep our room germ-free, will be appreciated throughout the year.
Page Protectors
These great plastic sleeves will help us keep our OWL books in order this year. Donations of these will also be appreciated!
