August 12 Board Meeting Highlights
Los Altos School District Teacher Training
Assistant Superintendent, Sandra McGonagle presented information regarding Curriculum and Instruction Department's summer work on math alignment, communication alignment across the schools, and summer professional development provided both in and out of district.
Part of the reason LASD attracts the best and brightest teachers is that we believe that when our teachers grow, our students learn even more. That is why our schools invest time and resources into professional development for our talented and dedicated teachers. Summer opportunities for our teachers included a project-based Science Teacher Institute at the Monterey Bay Aquarium, a week-long math instruction institute and social-emotional learning through Responsive Classroom.
Budget Update and Adjustments
Budget Adjustments include corrections based on the finalized state budget and any property tax increase, as well as employee raises. The Budget Adjustments also implement the Budget Committee's recommended cost cutting measures to pay for employee raises. The Board approved the Budget Adjustment Resolution 5-0, and directed staff to implement the Committee's recommendations.

Community Engagement Process Update
The Community Engagement Project Team provided an update of the public process, designed to achieve a community-supported plan to house Bullis Charter School in the long term. The Project Team worked over the summer to complete informational documents and schedule charrettes and workshops for community participation in the fall. In September and October, LASD will be working with PTAs and community organizations to provide information on the process through small group presentations, designed to generate participation in the charrettes and workshops in the fall. Please visit the Community Engagement Web Page for more information and email communityengagement@lasdschools.org to ask questions about the process and find out more about how you can get involved.
Report on the Start of the School Year
Superintendent Baier reported a smooth start to the school year, after visiting all schools in the district. He met with new and returning teachers, who are excited to work with their new students this year on their growth as life long learners. He reminded our parents to please join their school community for Back to School Night. Check your school's website for more information. Remember to think about child care--Back to School Nights are for parent attendance only to give you the time to learn about the upcoming school year!
Appointments to the Citizens Advisory Committee for Finance
Thank you to the community volunteers who will join the CACF this year. The new members are: Jay Gill, Laura Teksler, Chris Roat, Lori Sevick, Kellie Riccoboni and Swati Sinha. Most of the new CACF members graduated from the LEAD program sponsored by the Los Altos Community Foundation, promoting civic engagement. The CACF is a committee of community volunteers that oversees long-term district financial issues, including facilities needs; monitors expenditures of parcel tax funds; and makes recommendations on major, long term financial decisions to the Board.
