Alcatraz Gardens Docent
Are your thumbs all green with vitality? Do you enjoy sharing information about the flora of the world? Is one of your favorite tools a shovel? Then consider becoming an Alcatraz Garden Docent.
Garden docents present interpretive programs to visitors of all ages. Docents lead visitors through the gardens for up to an hour and/or engage the public at a designated stop at the gardens.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Lead tours and/or engage the public at designated gardens.
- Effectively convey the stories of past residents and the role gardens played in their lives, as well as information on the current project and garden plants.
- Learn the history of Alcatraz’s historic gardens and have a desire to keep learning about Alcatraz and the gardens.
KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS DESIRED
- Must have the physical ability to lead visitors around the island, which includes taking them up and down a steep set of stairs OR be able to engage visitors at designated locations.
- Complete the docent application and attend an interview on Alcatraz.
- Commit to guiding garden tours twice a month year-round, including some weekends, for a minimum of one year.
- Complete docent training. Training is given by National Park Service and Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy staff. Trainees will learn and practice the skills needed to lead successful tours.
