Subject Highlights:
Mr Foreman has nominated his Year 12 Psychology group for their excellent work and their confidence to participate in a subject they have not studied before. In particular, Victoria for her excellent knowledge, enthusiasm and verbal contributions to the lessons sand the progress she is making in understanding this subject.

Psychology:
Year 12 student Victoria has made an impressive start to her Year 12 Psychology studies. She has shown commitment and dedication, always arriving to lessons prepared and having read around the topic being studied. A truly self-motivated student that has already demonstrated great analytical skills. Also nominated is Year 13 student Julia who has shown resilience throughout the year being able to tackle some difficult A2 concepts such as Biopsychology and statistical analysis. Julia is a kind hearted student that is always willing and able to support her peers in their learning, a credit to the subject.
Sociology:
Year 10 student Kade, who despite joining Sociology slightly later than the rest of the cohort has made great strides to catch up. He is focused and engaged in all lessons and took an active role in the recent crime scene to courtroom workshop. Kade is able to critique and examine Sociological concepts with apparent ease and is already honing his exam technique!
Also nominated is Year 11 student Isabella who has shown knowledge across a wide range of topics within recent assessments Isabella's dedication to her studies is apparent. An able student with high ambitions she is a pleasure to have in lessons and is a shining Sociology star!
Mrs Hopkins has nominated Year 11 Sociology students Bianca for her great contribution and engagement in lesson and Ryan for offering differing perspectives for difficult questions.
Curriculum Focus:
Year 7 Science:
This term, Year 7 are working on topics from the 3 sciences. In Chemistry they are exploring mixtures and different ways to separate them. They have been working hard on planning and completing a practical where they separate pure salt from rock salt. In biology they are looking at sexual reproduction in animals, exploring the sexual reproduction organs of animals and the idea of becoming pregnant, gestation, birth and development. Finally in physics they are looking at energy stores and how different forms of renewable and non-renewable energy and then explore forces and how these work together to cause objects to move in a specific direction.
Questions:
1. What types of separating techniques do you use to separate salt from rock salt
2. What is the difference between a renewable and a non-renewable energy resource?
3. What is the difference between a foetus and an embryo?
Year 8 Science:
This term, Year 8 are working on topics from the 3 sciences. In Chemistry they are exploring the history of the periodic table and how chemical properties play an important part in our modern periodic table. In biology we are exploring the world of unicellular organisms, these include a variety of examples including bacteria and protists. Finally in physics they are looking at energy stores and how different forms of renewable and non-renewable energy.
Questions:
1. Who created the periodic table that we have based the modern day one from?
2. What are the 5 kingdoms of life?
3. What are the different energy stores? Can you give an example of each one?
Year 9 Science:
This term, Year 9 are working on topics from the 3 of sciences. In Chemistry we are looking at various ways to separate different mixtures, including looking at 2 different methods to separate ink. In biology we are exploring health, disease and the development of medicines. This topic explores various types of disease, how diseases and spread and how we fight off diseases.
Questions:
1. What 2 separation techniques can you use to separate ink?
2. How could you use chromatography to compare the pigments in different brands of Smarties?
3. Why does a vaccine only protect you against one type of disease?
Sociology Workshop:
Year 10 Sociology students took part in a 'crime scene to courtroom' workshop, whereby they learnt of all of the different roles, and therefore possible careers, open to those working in the criminal field. The workshop was lead by an ex-police officer and trained barrister giving students great insight into the legal system. Students were able to visit a mock crime scene, take investigative roles and come to together to form a verdict based on the facts presented. All students were highly engaged and focused throughout the day, showing amazing detective abilities!
Poster Competition:
Students have been creating poster in tutor time as part of our behaviour curriculum for 'Right Place, Right Time' to encourage students to follow our expectations and why this is important. The winning poster was created by Lucie in 7TA and her poster will now be displayed around school. Miss Nathwani has shared it has been lovely working with Lucie who gave her approval for the final design which she is pictured below with.
Library News:
Miss Cunningham would like to thank Anya who is always bright and enthusiastic, and happiest when helping staff or students in school. Year 13 student Anya sets such a positive example to our younger students (who are always asking for her when she's not in the Library!) and today she helped put up our Christmas decorations along with the Library Helpers this week, adding Christmas spirit to the Library.
