Corona High School - A Tradition of Excellence Since 1896
Welcome Back Panther Families!
We are back! The short summer is over and we are already one week into another historical Panther year! I'd like to start off by first wishing all our families affected by the recent fire a speedy and full recovery. Our thoughts are with those families and hope that there is a sense of normalcy at this point, especially since our students are back on campus.
A lot of work and planning went in over the summer to prepare for this year and make it even better than last! We are experiencing a lot of positive growth in many areas of student achievement and we continue to make progress on updating some of our facilities, including our new turf in Panther Stadium that our football team will debut for our Homecoming game on September 7th.
This year we welcome new programs aimed at enriching our students' high school experience and preparing them for college or career upon graduating from Corona. Along with Eleanor Roosevelt High School, we are now the second high school in CNUSD to offer a Dual Language Immersion (English/Spanish) program that will continue to grow as we add new cohorts every year. We have also started two new pathways, Aviation and Computer Science; and as the first CNUSD high school to kick off our Corona STEM Academy, we will have our first graduating class in the Engineering, Biomedical, and Health Careers pathways.
On June 1st we graduated nearly 600 Panthers and sent them off to colleges /universities throughout the entire country (including the Ivy League), into the workforce, and 23 were brave enough to defend our freedom and joined the military. This year we welcome about 2,500 students, including 700 freshmen transitioning from our feeder intermediate schools to high school.
I cannot adequately express my excitement for this year as I know our teachers and staff will continue to give everything they have to support all our students. Our first week went rather smoothly and I expect the rest of the year to follow suit.
Be sure to follow me on Twitter (@CoronaPrincipal) for updates throughout the week on anything Panther-related. Here's to what will be another fantastic year at Corona High School as we continue our Tradition of Excellence - Since 1896!
Respectfully,
Antonio Gonzalez, Ed.D.,
Principal
Schoolwide News
Welcome New Panthers
As with any large high school like ours, there is usually a degree of staff turnover year after year, and 2018-19 is no different as we welcome three new teachers, one new office clerk, a new Workability clerk, and an Assistant Principal of Athletics to the Panther family.
- Mrs. Christine Bentley is teaching five sections of Film Photography and brings with her years of extensive professional/industry experience that will immensely benefit our students.
- UCLA graduate Mr. Conrad Maag is teaching five sections of Visual Arts 1 and joins us after 7 years of teaching experience outside of CNUSD. His enthusiasm makes him a great addition to our Arts Department and our overall Panther community.
- Mrs. Jacquie Kleen's 7 years of experience teaching at the community college level provides her with the unique opportunity to bring that relevance directly to our students as she teaches Integrated Math I and II.
- Mrs. Grace Magana is a Corona High School alum and she is excited to be back to support us in the Administration Office as a clerk to our assistant principals. She has been with our district for 28 years and comes to us directly from Washington Elementary.
- Mrs. Dana Meyers can be found in our Workability office where she works with some of our special needs students transition into the workforce. She comes to us from Centennial High School and has been a great fit since walking onto our campus.
- Mr. Jeff Stevens is in the role of Assistant Principal of Athletics and brings with him 15 years of high school Social Studies teaching experience along with 6 years as an administrator and/or Athletic Director. His job duties are extensive, but he has demonstrated a great skillset since coming on board.
Back to School Night (BTSN)
Panther Academic Saturday School (PASS)
As we did last year, we will once again be offering PASS on select Saturdays beginning on September 8th. We are still working on finalizing the schedule, but look for PASS updates here, on my Twitter account (@CoronaPrincpal) and other social media outlets, and our school website. Support offered will vary from week to week depending on teacher availability. PASS will not be offered on 3-day weekends or over breaks.
Due to us having lost 5 days of instruction, PASS can be a great opportunity to make up some of that time over the course of the semester/year.

ASB/Activities
ASB Cards
A great way for your child to have a better high school experience is by getting him/her involved in any of extracurricular activities and events. An ASB card provides opportunities throughout the year for our students get involved while saving money. This little card can very well end up saving $$$ over the course of the year and can even pay for itself after only a few uses. Here are some of the perks:
- FREE admission to ALL home sporting events, excluding CIF playoffs (these are never free); that's a savings of at least $125
- Discounts on ALL dances and events (including the Performing Arts); that's another savings of at least $30
- FREE athletic patches and inserts (patches cost $20 without an ASB card and inserts cost $5); that's a potential savings of at least $25
- FREE giveaways on GOT ASB? Days
- Today is the first GOT ASB? Day where students received a FREE t-shirt!
- ASB Cards can be purchased for $40 in the Student Store, but students receive benefits valued at approximately $200 (maybe even more as new activities get added to the calendar throughout the year)
Homecoming (September 1st)
Athletics
In this section, I will provide weekly updates on our in-season Athletics teams. Corona High School competes in the Big VIII League along with our other CNUSD high schools (Eleanor Roosevelt, Norco, Centennial, and Santiago) and Riverside MLK High School. Our league is one of the toughest in the state as we showcase nationally recognized teams in just about every sport. This does not make it easy for any of us, but it sure makes for an exciting year! I'm always impressed by our student-athletes and their dedication to both athletics and academics. This year we are expecting even greater success than in the past as our programs continue to grow; and with a new Assistant Principal of Athletics, Mr. Stevens brings with him an impressive resúme to support all our programs.
Currently we are in the Fall Sports Season, which includes football, girls volleyball, girls golf, girls tennis, cross country, and boys water polo (back-to-back Big VIII League champions and going for a threepeat). AND this year for the first time ever, cheerleading is now a CIF sport and our squad, along with our other district high schools, will be competing for titles.
- Football: Ron Gueringer (Coach G., PE teacher) returns for his second year leading our program. We will be playing a home game tonight at Norco High School against Rancho Christian. Due to a delay in the installation of our new field turf, our debut will be our Homecoming game on September 7th. Until then, be sure to come out and support our Panthers!
- Freshman Football: Our freshman football program has a revamped coaching staff that includes three of our very own teachers. Shane Wiley (Social Studies teacher and department chair) makes his exciting return to Panthers football as the head coach, and is assisted by Marcus Guzman (ELA and Puente teacher) and Matt Smith (STEM/math teacher). They have our boys playing hard and the early improvement is already noticeable.
- Cross Country: Alleen Porter (STEM/science teacher) makes her return as our head coach and is also working our runners to prepare them for the season.
- Girls Volleyball: Paul Schroeder (AP US History teacher) made his head volleyball coaching debut this year and has already experienced a successful first week! He has coached our team to two home victories. Last night defeating Temescal Canyon HS in a close 5-set match. He has these girls clicking on all cylinders and will play again at home next Thursday. Let's #packthegym!
- Girls Golf: Chris Salgado (campus security and Corona alum) returns as as girls golf coach (he's been our only coach since the program started 5 years ago) and has already coached the girls in a close match, but fell just shy.
- Girls Tennis: Karen Osterkamp (Lee V. Pollard counselor and Corona alum/tennis superstar) makes her return as our head tennis coach and does so with passion and enthusiasm. She has the girls practicing hard as they prepare for their first match coming up real soon!
- Boys Water Polo: Reginald Hamblin (SPED teacher) continues to lead our program and is seeking a third straight Big VIII League championship. With losing key players to graduation (including his own son now playing at the college level), he has the boys training hard to prepare for the highly competitive league competition.
- Cheerleading: We welcome Robin Maffucci (ELA teacher and department chair) back for her second year as cheer coach/advisor, and as mentioned above, cheer is now a CIF sport! Their competition seasons will not begin until the winter and spring, but for now they will continue to support our fall sports teams as they have done so enthusiastically.
