Looking for fun stuff to do over vacation?
Here are some ideas!
Support Environmental Science in 15 minutes from your yard!
Want to learn about birds while helping the environment? Consider participating in the Great Backyard Bird Count February 12 - 15!
As stated on Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC) website, “[e]ach February, for four days, the world comes together for the love of birds. Over these four days we invite people to spend time in their favorite places watching and counting as many birds as they can find and reporting them to us. These observations help scientists better understand global bird populations before one of their annual migrations.”
Looking for a fun warm up? Check out this website where you can click on a bird to hear it's unique song!
Three Ways to Participate in the Backyard Bird Count
On your own at your convenience
Participation is easy and takes very little time. You can become a member of this community of scientists anywhere you can see even a single bird. And you can spend as little as 15 minutes or as long as the full four days! Click here to participate.
You must be 13 years or older to create a personal account, but families can participate together under a single account.
Don’t know much about birds? No problem! The GBBC website has resources to get you started and here are pictures of birds commonly found in Framingham.

The Hour of Code Choice Board,
If your child is ready to jump into a course, there are several options presented below.
Code.Org offers an express course that will take about 12 hours to complete. They have different versions for students ranging in age from preK-12. Find the one that's right for you! Looking for more? Try Khan Academy's Intro to Computer Science - you'll learn to code in Java Script!
Want to do something as a family? You can learn to code together by streaming episodes of Code Break, the largest, interactive, computer science classroom ever
Most of the follow up courses require parent permission and a personal email address to sign up for an account. Before signing up, you should take into consideration that FPS will have no oversight of these personal accounts, and, as with all online sites, you should carefully review each site's Terms of Use and Privacy Policies, to make sure you are comfortable with them.
We wish you all a wonderful and creative break, and a joyous start to the New Year
preK-12 International Computer Science Fundamentals
Code.Org's International Computer Science Fundamentals courses are translated into Portuguese, Spanish and over 25 other languages. The different courses support students aged 4-18. Each course has 10-20 lessons.. Students study basic programming concepts and develop interactive games or stories they can share.
The courses teach the foundational concepts of programming using drag and drop blocks rather than a programming language such as JavaScript or Python. Blocks are an easier way to get started and can be fully translated into any language. Course 1 uses picture blocks rather than words to support pre-readers.
To change the language of the course, watch this screencast to see how to scroll to the bottoom of the page and use the language toggle.
Khan Academy: Introduction to Programming
In the Introduction to Programming Course, Khan Academy teaches the concepts of the JavaScript programming language. .

Here's a brief description of how Khan Academy teaches programming and how you can learn the most in the course.
They teach using "talk-throughs". A talk-through is like a video, but it's actually interactive- you can pause at any time if you want to play with the code yourself, and you can spin-off if you want to make your own version. Click here or on the picture to see an animated GIF of a talk-through (there will be sound in the actual talk-throughs!) After the talk-through, you'll get a step-by-step coding challenge and be guided through them with messages and hints.
You'll start with an introduction and then have choices of how to continue: learning how to make an interactive webpage, how to draw and make animations, and programming games and visualizations are a few of your options.
Family Coding Activities: Code Break & Hora del Código En Vivo
Keep computer science fun by taking a Code Break! With a dozen episodes and activities to choose from, you can create a cypher with Ashton Kutcher, learn about variables with Yara Shahidi, and even explore how the Internet works with the actual inventor of the Internet, Vint Cerf.
Each episode is lead by Code.org Founder, Hadi Partovi, and includes inspiring guests, mini-lessons on computer science concepts, and a weekly challenge to engage students of all ages and abilities, even those without computers. While our live episodes have ended for now, you can still watch past episodes and complete the activities.
Help pass the law to establish our state dinosaur!
And the winner is.....Podokesaurus holyokensis
Thanks to everyone who voted! The first dinosaur described by a female geoscientist has been proposed as our official state dinosaur. Now we need to ask our representatives in the state legislature to co sponsor bill numbers HD1392 & SD698 to make our dream come true. This is a great way to teach our kids about the legislative process and how laws get made!
Sign up for Tree-Plenish to help FHS students make Framingham bloom!
Tree-Duce, Tree-Use, Tree-Cycle
Each school year, Framingham High School consumes an immense amount of paper. This year, the Environmental Awareness Club is giving back to the environment in a new way! We have partnered with Tree-Plenish, an organization that aims to replenish the environment with lost resources. Our members have worked hard to raise the money needed to provide the Framingham community with 270 tree saplings! On May 1st, 2021 we will be planting these saplings around the city and we need your help! Please visit the Tree-Plenish website to sign up in teams of 2-3 people.
