Student Spotlight
May was a big month for the fine arts in Canby, with both the choir and bands seeing state success.
Choir
First off, under the direction of Brooks Gingerich, the choir took first place in state for the first time ever! State champs!
Boasting the biggest choir in the state this year, Canby competed in the 5A division for the win and received the highest score of any choir in all divisions. Canby was the only choir in the state to earn the “Superior” ranking, receiving a score of at least 90 from each judge and higher than 52 in sight reading. Canby earned scores of 96, 98, and 95, and a 55 in sight reading. Congratulations Canby Choir!
The very next weekend, Director Nick Luchterhand took the wind ensemble to the OSAA state championships and won second place! Then the jazz band competed at the Oregon Music Education Association State Jazz Championships for fourth place!
Moving On Up
Ahead of graduation and 8th grade celebrations, students recently had the opportunity to participate in the annual Grad March and 8th Grade Fly-up.
High school seniors donned their graduation regalia and returned to their middle schools and elementary schools to march the halls and celebrate with past staff members and younger students. Then all 8th graders visited Canby High School for an assembly, tours, and club fair. What a day!
Graduation is taking place at 7 p.m. June 9 at the Canby High School stadium, by ticket only. Baker Prairie Middle School’s 8th Grade Celebration happens at 6:30 p.m. June 12 in the Canby HIgh School gym. Finally, Ninety-One’s 8th grade celebration is at 6:30 p.m. June 14 in the school’s courtyard.
