St. Cecilia School Summer Notes
July 19, 2022
Living and Sharing our Mission - Cardinals in the Community
- To teach and live the Catholic faith with a nurturing, family-like community.
- Teach respect for all.
- Foster each student's academic potential.
Our students live and share the mission both in the classroom and out in our communities. See this week's "Cardinals in the Community" who are living the mission this summer. If you have examples of how our students are displaying the mission and sharing their faith with others, please send this information to Mrs. Pick (jpick@stcecilia.net).

Museum Visits
Loved seeing the McCreery and Richard families taking in the beauty of the Durham. Did you know there is a special spot about the Cathedral there?!
Communication from/to/with School
St. Cecilia Cathedral School is a Catholic school whose purpose is to bring each of its students, faculty, and parents a living realization of the Christian concept of man through both instruction and experience. We depend on the parents, the child's first teachers, to help him/her in this apostolate. The goal of St. Cecilia is to work with parents to provide their children with an education of the highest quality and to build a strong foundation for success in high school and beyond.
There are numerous ways the school communicates with the community. Please take this week to be sure you are receiving/following these communications so you can stay up to date during the school year:
- Take Home Tuesday (THT) Newsletter comes from the school office each week via email. These are also shared on all social media outlets. These weekly newsletters contain the most important reminders, information, and weekly to-do's for your family. Be sure your email address is updated with the school office so you don't miss these. They will look just like these summer newsletters through Smore. Communication from the school is mostly electronic so it's important you are checking your email frequently.
- Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram are great ways to see what's going on in the building, around campus, and to share all of the amazing things happening at St. Cecilia. Pictures and videos are posted frequently and you never know if your child(ren) will be showcased. Social media is the perfect way to share our successes with our community.
- Staff Emails will be provided to you at Meet the Teacher Night and are also available on the school website and Family Handbook. Please remember teachers are busy with your child(ren) during the school day so if you need to contact them for immediate concerns, call the school office. Teachers return any email communications within 24-hours.
- Sycamore School is our information management system for attendance, health information, and grading. Students in Grades 3-8 will have their grades online through Sycamore. Grades are entered weekly so you can stay up to date with their progress. Teachers put 3-5 grades in each week (on average), some may have more grades than that each week. The school ID # is 1273 and a private username and password is required. Please contact Mrs. Hickey, our Director of Technology, should you need help setting up your Sycamore account.
- St. Cecilia Cathedral Website contains almost anything and everything you need to know about school. Bookmark this page! This has everything from the school calendar, to Completely Kids information, to the Family Handbook, to prospective family information.
These communication tools allow us to share with you what is happening here at school. These are in order of importance for reading and staying up to date. For example, checking your email is a higher priority than checking the school website. It would be expected that parents check their email AT LEAST once every day (just as we expect teachers to do).
School Prep Reminders:
1. Doctor Appointments: Now would be a great time to finalize appointments for your children so there is minimal disruption to learning once school begins. Think about squeezing in annual dentist and doctor appointments, hair cuts, etc. in this last month of summer. Health clinics are busy this time of year so it might not be possible to get everything in before August 18.
2. K & 7th Grade Physicals: Remember that any student in Kindergarten and 7th grade needs a school physical. You can have the doctor's office send the paperwork directly to the school via email or you can bring in a copy at the start of the school year. We sometimes get the question about why we require vaccinations for school. Catholic schools are subject to the same state and federal guidelines as public when it comes to health regulations. Should your child not have the necessary vaccinations, we require either a doctor or religious waiver.
3. Handbook Reminders:
- Time to schedule hair cuts so kids are all set this August. Reminder that boys' hair must be above the eyebrows, ears, and collar WITHOUT sweeping it aside or tucking behind the ears. All boys and girls hair must be natural colored (no colored tips, even if those colored tips are natural in color).
- No acrylic nails. If nail polish is worn, must be all the same color.
- Boys can wear a simple religious chain or cross necklace but no earrings. Girls can also wear a simple religious chain or cross necklace and can also wear no more than two piercings per ear.
- Now would be the time to get to DiGiorgio's for new school uniforms. No time? You can call them or order online as well! If you wait until August, many times the shelves have been picked through and then you'll have to order and wait for awhile until your uniform pieces come in.
All families at St. Cecilia Cathedral are required to complete at least 15 hours of service to school or parish. Whether you receive in- or out-of-parish tuition, we rely on all of our families to complete these hours to keep tuition and other costs low throughout the year.
Every teacher, coach, assistant coach, and volunteer who has direct contact with any grade school children are required to complete Safe Environment training through the Archdiocese of Omaha. Summer is the perfect time to get your training and background check completed so you are all ready for August. Remember Safe Environment training is valid for six (6) years.
