Did You Know....
Akron's annual high school track meet will take place this Saturday, April 29. This will be the 3rd Annual Tom Meyer Invitational as it was renamed after Tom Meyer upon his retirement. Tom coached track for 40 years at Akron High School. Coach Meyer also served 22 years as basketball coach and 22 years as our athletic director. He is a member of the CHSCA Hall of Fame and has been named a National Track Coach of the Year. This last summer he was inducted into the National High School Coaches Hall of Fame.
He has earned numerous accolades over the course of his career including 8 State Track Championships, 10 State Track Runner-up finishes, and 1 State Basketball Championship. Tom Meyer is a high school coaching legend in Colorado. The true measure of his career has been the positive impact he has made on the lives of the student athletes he has taught and coached over his 40 year career here at Akron.
Arbor/Earth Day
Thursday, all of our elementary students celebrated Earth Day and Arbor Day.
Throughout the day, classes were able to:
-Plant a tree at our softball field and decorate and plant flowers in new flower boxes;
-Discover different types of wildlife found in Colorado;
-Make “Seed Cookies” that can be planted at home to grow wildflowers for bees and butterflies;
-Learn about the types of plants that grow in our area, and learn why marigolds are wonderful to plant in our vegetable gardens, and plant our own marigolds;
-Spend time cleaning up trash around our school grounds;
-Play “Ecosystem Jeopardy” and seeing plants under a microscope.
We are so very grateful to Mrs. Megan Reid for her organization of this day, Mr. Ryan Dreitz and his Construction students for building the planter boxes, Mrs. Mollie Dreitz for helping students plant flowers, plant marigold seeds, and supervise students as they completed these activities, and Ms. Dollie Gonzales, Mrs. Kristi Roseberry (and her daughters) and the rest of the NRCS staff for all of their help with the educational activities for our students today.
Colorado FFA Foundation names Jackson Filla the Edward B. Cordes Scholar
The Colorado FFA Foundation and the Cordes Family are pleased to announce that Jackson Filla from Akron, Colorado, will receive the Edward B. Cordes Scholarship. Filla will receive full tuition, allowances for books and fees, as well as a partial living stipend.
Through an application process, Jackson was named a finalist and after a virtual interview with members of the Cordes Family and the FFA Foundation Scholarship Committee was named the 2023 winner.
“Active in FFA, sports, scouts, and community service, along with his outgoing personality, Jackson was a very strong candidate. I know Ed would have really liked Jackson”, said Polly Jessen, committee chair.
In January of 2020 Edward B. Cordes, his wife Polly Jessen, son Matt Cordes and daughter Katie Cordes established the Edward B. Cordes Scholar Program to be administered by the Colorado FFA Foundation.
The program created a scholarship fund which provides full tuition scholarships to Colorado FFA members who attend college or trade schools in Colorado. The fund will provide scholarships to students until at least 2050. Ed passed away in March of 2020, but his legacy lives on through this program.
Filla joins three previous Cordes Scholars next year to mark the first time that the scholarship is funding students at full scholarship capacity.
