Weekly Update September 8, 2023
Head Cheetahs Message
Families,
We hope everyone managed to stay cool during the heat wave this past week. I’m thankful that our classrooms have AC units, and our staff kept a close eye on our learners to be sure that no one was overheating. Temperatures are expected to drop back into the seventies next week, so we’ll be able to get our students back outside for recess! Next week, we also begin our universal assessment cycle, so it will be important to maintain regular routines, eat a healthful breakfast, and provide outdoor exercise. Looking forward to a fabulous week ahead!
Have a lovely weekend!

Pawsitive Office Referral
A PAWsitive office referral is submitted when a staff member recognizes a student who is going above and beyond to exemplify one of our three school rules - taking care of others, taking care of self, & taking care of things.
Library News
Welcome Back from the Memorial School Library Media Center!
The year is off to a great start in the Memorial School Library Media Center! This year we will continue to integrate technology and 21st century information literacy skills into your student’s library experience. We will be using our library time to explore, create, and develop critical thinking and research skills, in addition to fostering a love of reading, in a fun and welcoming environment.
Classroom Expectations:
During the month of September students will be establishing library routines and norms. Students in grades preK, K and 1 are busy learning about proper book care, the parts of a book and the roles of the author and illustrator. They have also participated in read a-louds with the theme of school and library. Students in grades 2 and 3 are reviewing library expectations and basic library skills. They will be discussing how to choose a “just right book” and will review using the Chromebooks.
You may search our library collection, online at http://easthamptonpsct.booksys.net/opac/memorial/ Students will be learning how to use/reviewing the catalog in the coming weeks.
Book Check out:
Students will begin book checkout during their library period this week. Students are permitted to have one book checked out at a time and books are due back the following week on library day. Students may renew a book as long as no one is waiting for it. We recommend that students keep a plastic shopping bag in their backpack to keep their book in, to protect from spills and damage.
Students are encouraged to mindfully select books that are appropriate for their reading level. However your student may bring home a book that needs to be read with an adult. This is also encouraged and an important part of their reading development.
You can find more information on our library web page located on the school website (http://easthamptonps.org).
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Flannery and Mrs. Hill
MEMORIAL - What’s Cookin’ in the Kitchen?
Farm to School:
Did you know that 90% of our produce this fall comes from farms within 20 miles of our district? This week your kiddos enjoyed roasted potatoes, cucumbers, peppers and tomatoes from Cold Spring Farm in Colchester, and apples from Beckett Farms in Glastonbury. Not to mention salads with edible flowers straight from the Memorial Garden!
Lunch They’ll Love to Munch:
Your kids will LOVE our Bacon Chicken Ranch Tacos this Tuesday! 2 soft tortillas stuffed with chicken tenders, lettuce, tomatoes from Cold Spring Farm, and topped with shredded cheddar, bacon and ranch dressing. It doesn’t get better than this!!
In the Garden:
Our Garden club hit the ground running this year! Our third graders weeded one of the beds, planted Collard Green seeds for the fall, and harvested Tomatillos. Today was the first day of garden club. We got to explore the garden together and learn what is growing still and what is in all the garden beds. We weeded and raked where the carrots used to be and planted collard green seeds to grow in that bed next. We picked the last few remaining strawberries today to taste and checked on the pumpkins growing. We also got to pick the tomatillos that were ripe.
Our tomatoes need your help!
In this picture you can see that some of our tomatoes have end-rot. This is because they aren’t getting enough calcium (Yes, plants need calcium just like we do!) You can help by saving your eggshells in a ziplock bag in your freezer and sending them in with your students to Jen Bove’s attention. We’ll crush up the eggshells and sprinkle them around our tomatoes to give them extra calcium!

i-Ready Assessments
i-Ready Diagnostic
Each year the East Hampton Public Schools administers the i-Ready Diagnostic in Reading and Math in the fall, winter, and spring for grades 1-3 to monitor student growth and performance. The i-Ready Diagnostic is an adaptive assessment that adjusts its questions to suit your child’s needs. Each item a student receives is based on their answer to the previous question. For example, a series of correct answers will result in slightly harder questions, while a series of incorrect answers will yield slightly easier ones. The purpose of this is not to give your child a score or grade but to determine how to best support their learning. These results are reviewed as one data point amongst other assessments, observations and data regarding student performance. The assessment is integrated into your child’s day as part of their academic learning and is paced to ensure that they work on the assessment in small chunks of time. The implementation of this assessment is completed in accordance with Connecticut State Department of Education guidelines. I-Ready will begin the week of September 11th.
The i-Ready Diagnostic will provide results that help our team identify your child’s strengths and determine next steps for instruction. All students in grades 1-5 will have access to i-Ready Instruction upon completion of the Diagnostic. i-Ready Instruction provides students with lessons based on their individual strengths and areas for growth. These lessons are interactive and provide strategic supports to keep your child engaged as they learn. We will provide additional information about access to i-Ready Instruction and the frequency of use for that program once the Diagnostic is completed.

Safe School Climate
The East Hampton Board of Education and the school community as a whole promote a secure and productive school climate, conducive to teaching and learning that is free from threat, harassment, and any type of bullying behavior. Therefore it shall be the policy of the Board that bullying and/or teen dating violence committed against a student by another student is prohibited. The Board believes that a school environment in which students feel safe, supported, engaged and helpfully challenged is optimal for learning and healthy development. The Board seeks an environment in which students and adults feel socially, emotionally, intellectually and physically safe; an environment that is free of harassment, intimidation, teen dating violence and bullying. Our website provides links to various policies and reporting forms including our Safe School Climate Plan. Hard copies are also available in our main office. If at any point you have any concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to building administration for further assistance.
Attendance Matters
Please note
When considering the number of absences your student has accrued, keep in mind that a student must be present for 195 minutes in order for the day to count! When bringing your student in late, or signing them out early if they have not been in school for a 195 minutes the day will be recorded as an absence.
