Communicating About Attendance

A Priority for DCPS and Hyde-Addison
Student attendance is a priority for both DCPS and Hyde-Addison, as we know our students thrive with consistent routines and participation in rich instruction. This year, there are various types of communications being sent to families regarding student attendance and we want to provide clarity.
DCPS Communications
This year, DCPS began a pilot initiative with a partner organization, EveryDay Labs, to support in-seat attendance at schools across the district (FAQ sheet attached below for reference). These attendance communications are sent out separately from the school in various forms, including text messages and letters that are mailed home. In some cases, the DCPS notifications include a signature from the school principal, however the school is not informed when they are sent or what information they contain.
Hyde-Addison Communications
The school has a team that examines our attendance data weekly and communicates to specific families, as needed, to share information and provide support. Emails from this team are labelled "Attendance Matters" and have the heading pictured.
Accessing Attendance Information
If you'd like to look at your child's specific attendance records, log into the ASPEN parent portal! Log in details are below.
Attendance Reminders
- If your child was absent and you believe it should be excused, please email hyde.addison@k12.dc.gov and share the date they were absent and the reason, as well as any documentation, if applicable. Please note: A written note must be provided electronically to the school by the student’s parent/guardian within five (5) school days after the student’s return to school for an absence to be excused.
- Students who are absent for more than 4 consecutive days require additional documentation to be shared, in order to be excused. For example, a doctor's note.
- If you are looking to learn more about DCPS attendance policies, you can find them on the Hyde-Addison website.
