Halloween Week

The week leading up to Halloween is always an exciting one for students. It has great to see many of the fun activities happening, from pumpkin stores, special crafts and our long standing tradition of our kindergarten parade. Our kindergarteners typically visit classrooms on their parade but this year the weather cooperated and they paraded outside. We also had students vote for their favorite staff costumes this year and overwhelmingly Pikachu won. Congratulations to Ms. Holly, our Byam BCBA for being such a hit with students!

No School on Tuesday November 2

There is no school on Tuesday, November 2. Along with this being an election day, it is also a full professional development day for staff.

ALICE Drill Next Week

Dear Byam Families,

Next week we will be conducting our first ALICE drill of the school year. ALICE stands for Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate. This is a research based, options-based protocol that is non-sequential to respond to a dangerous individual at school.

To prepare for this drill we will be presenting each grade level with a social story to explain the drill on Wednesday and then follow up with an ALICE video created by the district in collaboration with the Chelmsford Police Department. We've used this process to introduce ALICE to our students since our initial implementation and have been pleased how our students and staff respond when conducting the drill. We have collaborated with the Chelmsford Police and Fire Departments on this drill to ensure that it is a developmentally appropriate experience.

After we conduct the drill, we will send a communication to inform you when it has occurred. Should you have any questions about ALICE or about this drill, either leading up to the drill or after you have been able to debrief with your child, please do not hesitate to reach out to us.

Chelmsford Public Library Spooky Story Contest

Every year the Chelmsford Public Library holds a Spooky Story Contest around Halloween. This year over 25 Byam students entered stories into the Chelmsford Public Library Spooky Story Contest, and the first place winners in EVERY elementary category are from Byam School!! Nora Marcsisin (K-1 category), Carter Stonehouse (Gr. 2), Leeya Perez (Gr. 3) and Clarissa Soderstrom (Gr. 4) are our first place winners. We are proud of all of our Byam authors and Mrs. Driscoll will have copies of the stories in the Byam library for anyone who would like to read them.

Byam School Council

Every public elementary, middle and high school in Massachusetts have a body known as a school council. This council is made up of educators, parents and community members from a a school. The purview for this group is to identify educational needs for the school and develop planning and goals to address these needs. We are looking for some parent volunteers who would be interested in serving on this group. The Byam School Council meets on one evening a month throughout the school year. Please email Mr. Fredette fredettej@chelmsford.k12.ma.us if you have interest in serving or if you have any questions.
