Family Engagement Newsletter 5/6-5/10
Good Morning!
I think with the school year ending and the weather improving has made a lot of us stir crazy and we have had some issues in the classroom with using kind words, sharing and taking turns. I have addressed this with the entire class as a whole and how we want to end this year on a great note because that is what it has been pretty much all year, a great year!
To encourage better behavior and to help us make it to the end of the school year I am introducing Star Student. I have done this in other years so this really is nothing new for this time of year. Typically the kids need that extra incentive to keep going at this time. Star Student is where I will be looking for a student each day left of school (15, 15 students in class :) and I will reveal who it is at the end of the day. This student receives 5 kid cash, a crown and a sticker for showing me they are being respectful, responsible, safe and kind. It doesn't stop there though. Each day a new student will be crowned as the new Star Student, they cannot get it again. However, if they are showing those four qualities continuously after getting Star Student they will receive two kid cash at the end each day up until the very last day. So there is still an incentive for those who already had Star Student as well. I think this will really boost our motivation in class these last three weeks! OH and on the very last day, if they continued to remain consistent, they will all receive an extra special parting gift from me as my star students!! :) It also does help if they hear it from you as well at home of what your expectations are for when they are at school and how they need to be respectful, responsible, safe and kind. Thank you in advance for your help and assistance with this!
In Foundational Skills we move into Unit 8 where we will add more tricky words to our schema as well as reviewing rhyming words. We won't get very far due to testing, our butterfly program, field day, etc. which all take place during our foundational skills time. This I am not concerned about because we covered A LOT since starting our pilot curriculum.
In reading we continue with our plants unit and talked about the Gigantic Turnip at the end of the week. I brought in a real one so they could touch it and see what it looks like. We talked about the life cycles of plants, trees and the turnip as well. This week we get into the basic process of pollination and the plant parts involved in pollination.
In math we are quickly wrapping up our module 10 with shape attributes, the commutative property (2+1=3, 1+2=3) and Think big, count small strategy where they learn to start with the greater number and count on with the smaller number. Our math test will be on Friday.
Speaking of tests our MAP Math test will be taking place on Monday and Tuesday. PLEASE charge their tablets so everyone can be ready for the test on time. I sent home bracelet reminders on Friday too to help remind everyone as well.
Our carnival kicks off on Thursday (see below). I will be at the Kindergarten game station so hope to see you there! If not, this is an annual event but just a different theme each year. :)
I think that is it for now. Thank you for your continued support, communication and kindness this school year. Let's have a great week!
