Earth Science Activity
Students in Mr. Dunn and Mrs. Light's Earth Science classes modeled how to make a map of Earth by tracing a three-dimensional orange peel onto a two-dimensional piece of paper. Students described the process as "easy to do, but hard to do well."
Earth Science Activity
The activity was meant to show that maps can be useful tools in studying Earth, but the process of projecting a 3-dimensional object onto a 2-dimensional space has inherent challenges. This led to a discussion of the potential bias in map making when cartographers make choices about how to display data; a useful experience in the development of students' critical thinking skills.

Federal Student Aid / New Timeline
Dear Class of 2024 students and families,
As you may have heard, Federal Student Aid has released a new timeline that will impact when students will receive college award packages. Right now, it is anticipated that colleges will not receive the FAFSA data until mid-March, therefore they will not be able to send financial aid packages until late March or early April. We know that this may cause you to delay your final decisions for next school year. We have been hearing from various colleges and universities and they recognize the impact that this may have on you and continue to figure out ways to address/support these changes. You may hear from colleges soon. We put together some things you can do while you wait:
First, file the FAFSA. Although there is a delay, the sooner you file the sooner you will receive an award letter. Note: FAFSA is running inconsistently on chromebooks. If possible, students/families should use a computer other than a chromebook.
Visit colleges that you have been accepted to or that you are interested in. Get a feel for the campus to make sure you have information that will help you with your final decision.
Use the FSA Student Aid Estimator to determine potential aid and compare it to actual college costs (using net cost calculator) as you begin to think about final college decisions.
Research and apply for scholarships: use this list to find scholarships that you may qualify for. They have varying requirements so you may qualify! (All scholarship providers should understand that they will not have FAFSA submission summaries until mid-March. They can produce evidence of FAFSA completion if necessary.)
Attend virtual webinars about financing college through MiStudentAid to learn more about various opportunities. Register and you will receive the recording even if you are not attending live.
If you are having challenges with the FAFSA form, Live chat and email (customerservice@studentaid.gov) has been working. Providing screenshots of issues in the email is helpful!

Traver Talk
This month I wanted to share with you an overview of attendance from the first semester at CHS. The overall attendance rate for all students has been at an average of 94% presence. Our district goal is to increase student attendance and with that we have some work to go. Currently, 106 students have missed at least 1 day out of every 2 weeks of school, while 23 students have missed at least 1 day out of every week of school. There is an obvious correlation between irregular attendance and academic performance, causing many of these students to have ended the semester with at least one class failed.
Not only does consistent attendance contribute to their academic success, but it also plays a role in their social and emotional well-being. Establishing a consistent schedule during this impressionable time in their lives is paramount in creating good habits in the students who will be the future leaders of our community. As we approach the upcoming Count Day on Tuesday, February 14th, we aim to achieve 100% student attendance. Our school PBIS team (Positive Behavior Intervention Systems team) We understand that there are instances where students may need to stay home due to illness or other emergencies. In such cases, please submit any necessary medical notes, obituary information, or court documentation to jokelly@clioschools.org so the absence is excused and does not count toward students negatively. You can also call 810-591-1375 to report your student's absence.
In our efforts to promote punctuality, we are conducting a Tardy Challenge with our seminars this month. The seminar class whose students have the least tardies will be rewarded with hot cocoa next Tuesday during seminar. It is important to note that students who are consistently tardy will receive a detention from their teacher after their 3rd tardy and for each one after that. Additionally, our administration conducts tardy sweeps as needed to ensure that students are where they need to be in a timely fashion. During these sweeps students in the hallway are ushered into the cafeteria where those falling below the tardy threshold will receive a warning, while others will be issued a detention.
We kindly ask for your support in instilling the importance of regular and healthy school attendance as a life skill for our students. Your partnership in reinforcing this priority is essential in ensuring the success and well-being of all our students.

Principal's Points
Dear Clio High School Families,
I hope this newsletter finds you well and that you had a wonderful week! As we approach the end of the winter season, we wanted to share some important announcements and updates with you.
Important Announcements:
Spring Testing Preparation: Our High School is preparing for our Spring testing cycle, which will take place in April Please take the time to ask your student about accessing Khan Academy. This is a free online application that provides standardized testing practice for all grades and content areas. The site provides practice tests, and feedback results, to provide testing experiences for your student. I encourage you to have your student visit the site to gain experiences with the test questioning process. Let's work together to help them succeed!
FAFSA Night Success: Thank you to all families who attended our recent FAFSA Night on February 6th! It was a huge success, and we are grateful for your participation. The event provided valuable information and guidance on the financial aid application process. If you were unable to attend, please reach out to our counseling department for assistance, as we are currently planning to have a second FAFSA event in the month of March. Please look ahead for the date and time of that event.
Celebrations from the Week:
We would like to celebrate the hard work and achievements of our students this week. Whether it was a successful project completion, a great performance, or a kind act towards a classmate, we are proud of every student's efforts. Please take a moment to recognize and celebrate your child's accomplishments.
Additional Information:
