Grade Level & Department News
First Grade: Hello from First Grade! Next week, we will continue with fiction texts by reading The Tale of Peter Rabbit. Our Letterland sound focus is -ew, -ue, & -ui and our spelling words for the week are: blue, new, true, suit, threw, fruit, drew, juice, few, chewing. In math, we will be working on telling time to the hour and half-hour. Please continue to practice sight words and read nightly. Also, study spelling words weekly. Our Spring Field Trip to see the Down East Wood Ducks is coming up on May 17th. Information for the trip will be sent in folders after Easter Break. Thanks for all you do!
Second Grade: Greetings from Second Grade! Next week in Letterland we will be learning about the vowel combinations -ear and -eer. We will begin to compare two versions of the same story. In math we will begin to collect and graph data. In Science we will continue to learn about animal life cycles. Please continue to read AR books, complete the weekly homework packet, study spelling words, and practice basic math facts with sums to 20.
Be reminded that our field trip is scheduled for May 24th, 2023 to Marbles Kids Museum in Raleigh, NC. Any parent/guardian who plans to attend must complete the volunteer information for Martin County Schools. The cost for students is $20 and the cost for parents is $12. All monies for the field trip are due by May 17, 2023.
Resource:
Art: Our awesome little artists have been working on Easter drawings this week! Second grade also learned about Overlapping by drawing easter eggs!
Music: Drum Circle has been another engaging music classroom activity this past week. We will enjoy drama, instrumentation, and literacy in this week’s lesson. April is “Earth Day” month. There are some cool songs to remind us how to keep the Earth beautiful. Be sure to check out Music Google Classroom for extra activities and resources!
Library: We have finished up the month of March learning about some inspirational women, and an interesting spin on St. Patrick’s Day with a story. First read about how Mary Walker dared to wear pants…as a woman in the 1800’s this was something unheard of! On St. Patrick's Day we read about how Fiona, an Irish immigrant moved from her home to Chicago in America, while she made fancy lace. Ending the women’s history month, we read a true story about how Kamala Harris and her sister made it possible to have a playground in their apartment complex courtyard. Ask your students which stories they enjoyed the most in the library this month!
School Nurse
Is it Allergies or a Cold?
1. If fever is present, it is likely to be a cold or viral infection of some kind, NOT an allergy.
2. Fatigue and exhaustion usually indicate a cold or viral illness.
3. Itchy, watery eyes indicate allergies, NOT a cold.
4. Clear, THIN nasal drainage along with itchy, watery eyes suggest allergies, while THICK nasal drainage indicates a cold or infection.
5. A common cold rarely has symptoms lasting over a week, while allergy symptoms will last longer (as long as allergens like pollen are present).
There’s no cure for the common cold. Typical treatments include rest, fluids, and over-the-counter medications. Nasal rinses can bring relief for both colds and allergies as well.
