This year, like most events, the annual VBSchools Partnership Expo will be virtual. While we won’t be able to host our usual thousand+ attendees face to face,

we think we can reach even more people virtually!

The 2021 Virtual Partnership EXPO will be hosted on a webpage. There, you will have the opportunity to learn about your partnerships between community organizations, students, families and staff. There will not be a live event associated with the webpage.

Each partner will have a listing that will include a video or flyer, contact information, a description, links to partner social media and tags for the types of partner activities offered including summer jobs, internships/job shadowing, summer camps, community service hours, virtual learning, classroom volunteers, fundraising and incentives.

The Virginia African American Cultural Center, Inc. (VAACC) is proud to share that in an effort to help address the current virtual needs of our youths and parents, we partnered with the VB IT department team and their Broadband consultant to install a Smart Pole on our property at 744 Hampshire Lane, 23462. (near the basketball courts). We appreciate the IT team for collaborating on this public facing project. This Smart Pole will serve the dual role of a WiFi hotspot connection for education purposes, and solar lighting which provides more safety for the youth and their families visiting the basketball courts or the picnic shelter . This is great news worth celebrating. for the Western Bayside community.

Family Outreach Representative Rachel Thompson specializes in community involvement and meeting the needs of specific groups within the school system. She helps to facilitate programs such as Princess Anne High School FamilyVoice, HispanicVoice, LGBTQIA StudentVoice Group, and Thalia Elementary's FamilyVoice.

“I am also working with the Pre-K program to make the registration process available in Spanish, with DTAL to create Spanish-language classes for faculty and administrators,” said Thompson. “[Additionally, I’m working] on… training for school office personnel that work with ESL families in the division.”

As a family outreach representative, Thompson is responsible for ensuring families receive the necessary resources to succeed both in and out of the school system.

“As we identify areas of need for our families, we can connect them with resources, advocate for them to receive equitable access and treatment, and create a division where students thrive academically and socially-emotionally,” said Thompson.

Though she only joined F.A.C.E. this year, Thompson holds a myriad of experiences to aid in her everyday work. For 16 years, she taught IB Spanish and AP Seminar at Princess Anne High School. Her familiarity with the Spanish language proves to be useful in relation to her favorite F.A.C.E. project: HispanicVoice group.

The HispanicVoice group offers a platform for Hispanic families to share their experiences and suggestions with the school community. This program creates space for a more inclusive, equitable, and accessible environment.

“I am so humbled and honored that the Spanish-speaking community in Virginia Beach has been so welcoming and so forthcoming with me in the short time I have been working with them,” said Thompson.

Above all, Thompson wishes to shape a healthy and inclusive school setting for everyone involved. She uses her position within F.A.C.E. to ensure each family receives support, especially during these difficult times.

“My hope is that deepening and strengthening our families' engagement with their schools will help students in every way,” said Thompson.

Founded in 2017, WE ARE VB strives to identify and aid students in need through fundraising and increased awareness. Secretary of the Board of Directors and Founding Board Member Julie Ambrosio contributes by executing and supporting specific programs within WE ARE VB. In addition, she acts as Program Manager of the Thrive and Emergency Assistance programs.

“WE ARE VB is committed to implementing programs which meet the immediate needs of students in need and lay the groundwork for consistent, long-term support programs which foster self-esteem, dignity, and their ability to meet their full potential as students and citizens,” said Ambrosio. “Our goal is [to] remove financial barriers to full school participation and provide assistive resources to improve quality of life and outcomes.”

The non-profit organization spearheads six core programs: Mentorship, Fuel Up, Thrive, Gratitude, College Scholarship, and Emergency Assistance. Ambrosio specializes in Thrive, an initiative to eliminate financial barriers such as field trip fees or club dues, and Emergency Assistance, a resource for families in critical emergencies.

“Through our work as volunteers in our children’s schools, we became aware of the staggering numbers of homeless and at-risk high school students supported by Virginia Beach City Public Schools each year,” said Ambrosio. “We are a group that thinks that each of us has the ability to make life better for another individual, so we imagined if we pooled our resources and engaged the community, we could collectively make life in Virginia Beach better for so many.”

WE ARE VB holds relationships with all 12 high schools in the Virginia Beach district. Students receive support through guidance counselors, social workers, and other resources within the school system.

“We believe that Virginia Beach school system personnel are exemplary in their knowledge of, and care and support of at-risk students, and our organization strives to be a nimble and easily accessible tool to empower them to do the very best for the students they support,” said Ambrosio.

While the ongoing pandemic interrupted certain plans, the organization soldiers on to provide aid to students in need. Since many families were affected by the pandemic, WE ARE VB intends to enact each of their programs in the new school year.

“Our goal is to implement our full slate of programs for students in the 2021-22 school year - particularly our Thrive program as its goal is to break down barriers to full participation in school life,” said Ambrosio.

With an increased demand for WE ARE VB’s services, students are encouraged to actively support the non-profit organization. Students and faculty can get involved and volunteer their time to help others in need.

“Students who wish to support our mission can form a student club at their high school to raise funds, food donations, and awareness for WE ARE VB,” said Ambrosio. “Students who are struggling and may need assistance should contact a trusted school resource such as their social worker, guidance counselor, an administrator, coach, or teacher.”

Old Donation School is the 2021 State Champion for grades K-3. They finished second in the Middle School (K-8) championship and 3rd in the upper elementary (K-5). John B. Dey ES finished 3rd in the K-3 championship standings.

VBCPS students have been invited to play in the state championship to be held in person May 22-23 in Dulles. These players earned their spots by either being one of the top 10 players in the state for their age group or by finishing high in the standings in one or more of the three online qualifying events that were held January-March. Normally any student can play in the state championship, but this year due to COVID, they had to use qualifiers to narrow the field from about 600 players to 160 (40 per age group) in order to meet social distancing and capacity restrictions.

To accomplish one of our goals we proposed and partnered with the VB Convention Center & Visitors Bureau (CVB) to publish our City's 1st Self-Guided Tour of Virginia Beach African American History. This brochure showcases several historic sites from First Landing Park to the Historic Seatack, known as the oldest African American community in the nation and the birthplace of Award winning artist, writer and producer, Pharell Williams. Both locals and tourists, especially our students, will be able to learn more and visit these historic local African American places.

Special thanks to Ms. Edna Hawkins Hendrix, author and local Historian and Mr. Mark Reed, Historic Preservation Planner for their assistance and input.

A Virginia Beach group called Care 4 Frontline, a.k.a. the Pantry Box Project, has started sending daily reminders to hospital staff and EMS workers that the community still cares.

Granola bars, chocolate bars, fruit snacks, juice: it’s all being hand-delivered to feed the frontline.

“They don’t really have time to sit down for a meal,” said Pantry Box Project Organizer Pam Blais. “When you are working in the emergency department and the ICU, I mean literally you are on your feet for 14 hours straight.”

That’s where the Pantry Box Project comes in. Blais formed the group with her friend Cathy Fox in September.

“We knew at some point the restaurants would not be able to give, and they were giving a lot,” Blais said.

Both women know the struggles well, with over 30 years of nursing experience. They said former colleagues in the area tell them hospital beds are filling back up with COVID patients.

“These patients are very sick, and acuity is high across the system,” Blais said.

Businesses also chip in. Every week they deliver donations from Brugger’s Bagels, Tropical Smoothie, Dollar Tree, Aldi, Harris Teeter, and more.

They even give out bananas with uplifting notes written on them.

“When you give somebody a banana that hasn’t eaten for eight or nine hours, or gone to the bathroom, and it says, 'You inspire us,'” said co-organizer Fox. “I’ve had nurses and I’ve had doctors that cry.”

The duo said they won’t get up and are even hoping to give, long-term.

“We are starting our own foundation and it is called Care 4 Frontline,” Blais said.

Blais said their mission is to let staff know they aren’t crushing COVID alone, leaving no hospital, EMS, or health department behind.

“We don’t want to forget about the very people that are making the sacrifice,” Blais said. “Yes, it is their job, but nobody signed up to work in a pandemic.”

In an effort to make the experience more festive and inclusive, we have moved the Pearls of Wisdom Party to Saturday, October 16 from 1-5 p.m. at 24th Street Park. I’m sure you can imagine that this was a juggling effort for the City Events office to orchestrate the many requests to reschedule events to a time that we all hope will be less constrictive. As more and more people are vaccinated and there is a downward trend of new COVID-19 cases in the area, it is more likely that by October we can increase capacity for the event. The original date of April 17 would not have allowed for the number of people currently holding event tickets.

If you have purchased tickets to the 2021 Pearls of Wisdom Party, they will grant you access to the October 16, 2021 event—even though the April 17, 2021 date is printed.

Promote‌ ‌and‌ ‌expand‌ ‌equitable‌ ‌access‌ ‌to‌ ‌services‌ ‌and‌ ‌programs‌ ‌that‌ ‌support‌ ‌families‌ ‌and‌ ‌students'‌ ‌through‌ ‌mutually‌ ‌supportive‌ ‌partnerships.‌ ‌-‌ ‌Partner‌ ‌with‌ ‌local‌ ‌agencies‌ ‌to‌ ‌provide‌ ‌wraparound‌ ‌services‌ ‌for‌ ‌students‌ ‌including‌ ‌early‌ ‌childhood‌ ‌supports,‌ ‌volunteers,‌ ‌childcare‌ ‌and‌ ‌funding‌ ‌opportunities.‌
