Now that the fall season is right around the corner and we are wrapping up those amazing summer vacations, it is time to continue to make Theta great. Welcome to our new state president, Beth Winstead and our returning State Director, Missy Wells. Again, let’s congratulate Elizabeth Miars for being selected to serve as the new NCDKG Executive Secretary. We appreciate her commitment to NCDKG. We thank Mary Paul for stepping up and accepting the “The Scarlett Letter” Newsletter Editor as Elizabeth takes on her new duties. You all make us proud to be DKG Women!!

Please remember to invite those amazing women leaders to join DKG Theta. I’m excited to say that we have prospective members joining us for the September Meeting. Let’s continue to grow Theta and assist our community/schools to being the best they can be. If you know of a woman leader, just let us know.

Also, consider making submissions to the DKG Fine Arts Gallery. Let’s show NCDKG our talented Theta Members. Submissions are accepted from August 15th thru September 15th. If you have any ideas, suggestions, recommendations that will keep us on our positive Theta Path, please let us know. Looking forward to much success in the last year of this Biennium. The Scholarship Committee met twice this summer. Work was done on the Marilyn Gray Scholarships, Theta Grants, and the distribution of funds brought to Theta by the Beta Phi/Theta merge

The NC DKG Educational Foundation asked that Theta revise the guidelines and rubric associated with the Marilyn Gray Scholarships. The Scholarship Committee members met, along with Connie Savell who is a member of the Foundation, and worked on a series of revisions which were then sent to Foundation. The guidelines, application and rubric used for Theta’s Grants were also revisited and needed changes made. Work was begun on the development of guidelines for the distribution of funds brought to Theta by the Beta Phi Endowment and Marguerite Bellois’ bequeath. A meeting held with a UNCW representative revealed that the Endowment is secure and ongoing. Another meeting is being scheduled with UNCW to work on details of a possible annual distribution of funds honoring the Bellois bequeath.

More details concerning the results of the Scholarship Committee’s summer meetings will be reported to the membership at our first meeting in the fall.

Updates to Theta’s handbook will be distributed at our fall meeting. Contact will be made with each member in advance to gather any needed changes in personal data.

Anyone who has cards for prospective members should get those to Connie Marks so those names can be presented at the fall meeting. After the membership approves those names, invitations to an orientation meeting will be sent.

Theta will again support BTs at D.C. Virgo Preparatory Academy and Williston Middle School. The BT Team, part of the EEC, decided to do something for these teachers during the workdays.

When I contacted Virgo, Principal Sabrina Hill-Black reminded me that Virgo is a year-round school and started classes in July. She told me Virgo has three BTs and that they were having their first BT meeting on August 5th (the coming week). She invited us to come introduce ourselves then. Connie Marks and Judy Busick delivered bins of school supplies for the BTs and Snack Bags for all attending the meeting. They were very appreciative! It was great to meet with them in person as that was not possible last year.

Our Williston contacts are Principal Chris Madden and Elizabeth Whittington. They sent me the names of their ten BTs and invited us to attend a short intro meeting for Tuesday morning (17th) . Sylvia Quinn and Judy Busick delivered "Snack Stash Bags" and introduced Theta's BT Support project to them. You will soon receive a list of supplies needed for their classrooms. We hope you will all participate!

The Purposes are the fundamental reasons our Society exists. They are the “why” our Founders organized DKG and continue to be the core guiding our actions as members.

1. To unite women educators of the world in a genuine spiritual fellowship

2. To honor women who have given or who evidence a potential for distinctive service in any field of education

3. To advance the professional interest and position of women in education

4. To initiate, endorse and support desirable legislation or other suitable endeavors in the interests of education and of women educators

5. To endow scholarships to aid outstanding women educators in pursuing graduate study and to grant fellowships to non-member women educators

6. To stimulate the personal and professional growth of members and to encourage their participation in appropriate programs of action

7. To inform the members of current economic, social, political and educational issues so that they may participate effectively in a world society

Teachers have gone above and beyond the last couple of years and are preparing to go back into classrooms and educational settings this month. Their dedication is inspiring and needs to be recognized!

The NC DKG Educational Foundation invites you to honor educators— females and males, members and non-members—through the Honoring Heroes project. You can “Celebrate a Teacher” and support the Educational Foundation too! The donation forms and celebration certificates are online, ready to print. You may mail checks or donate online. Instructions are on the form found here.

Chapters will be recognized for their contributions with a badge designed for display on newsletters and websites. One chapter from each region will be honored at the 2022 NC DKG Convention.
