A Note from Mrs. Pitts
Dear RES Families and Supporters,
“The primary goal of grading and reporting is communication. ..When used well, they provide vital information to students, parents, and teachers that can be used to enhance both teaching and learning.”
Thomas Guskey
Report cards summarize an assessment process that leads educators at Rye Elementary School to assign performance skills indicators to report progress for habits of work and learning (HOWLS) and academic progress for specific content skills. Each assessment conducted is used to inform our instruction and allows us to target skills and differentiate our instruction. The report card makes criteria public for students, parents and teachers. It is important to understand that a standards-based report cards assesses student performance against a specific and observable grade set of skills and measures each student against the identified grade level standard.
One purpose of the report card is to have students identify their own areas of strength and needed improvement, in addition to setting goals based on these self-assessments. When reviewing the report card with your child, we often recommend to families that they focus on the positive first, then an area that could improve and lastly, to choose a goal that your child can work towards before the next term. Allow your child to choose this goal to encourage ownership and encourage them to periodically reflect on their progress towards achieving their goal.
We are so proud of the efforts of our students and the educators who work diligently to understand each student according to their individual abilities and learning style. We also want to thank the families of Rye Elementary School for their continuous support and the trust you have instilled in our staff to provide the most enriching and fulfilling learning experience for your child. Our March conferences are a time for reflection and for teamwork to build between families and teachers. Our shared goal is for students to improve and reach their goals as we continue to support their effort and hard work.
Again, we truly appreciate your support.
Sincerely,
Michelle Pitts

Playground Update!
Did you grow up in Rye? If so, your elementary school playground is still there. It’s time for a new playground in Rye!
Playgrounds are a critical component in a child's physical, intellectual, creative and social development. Through active play, children gain first-hand information about themselves, their bodies, their peers, and their environment.
Play also develops increasingly complex behaviors as children grow and socialize, preparing them to function as healthy, confident adults. Finally, a community playspace provides a meeting area where caregivers and children can gather. These shared playspaces add to strengthening communities. Because of this, Rye Elementary School is looking to build a new playground.
The current playground, for students in preschool through Grade Two, was built almost 30 years ago and is very much in need of an update to be more inclusive, welcoming, and fun for all children in the Rye community.
In order to meet our goal of having a new playground for the 2023-2024 school year, we need the community's help. We are seeking donations to help us meet our goal of $200,000. Through a partnership with the Rye PTA we have already raised over $80,000, but we still need your help.
