What's New at Meridian?
Introducing Ms. Calderón, Meridian's new Art Teacher!
My name is Ms. Calderón and I have the opportunity to serve our students at Meridian PCS. I am currently the Creative Arts educator for our 6th and 7th graders. I am looking forward to building relationships with our students and developing the arts program at Meridian PCS. Students will learn and explore the elements of art while practicing application and developing vocabulary.
Currently, students are studying radial symmetry in art class. Artists will collaborate on their first project connected to radial symmetry. I look forward to sharing their final products with you.
Families may connect with me directly at pcalderon@meridian-dc.org
Congratulations 7th Grade and 7C!
Additionally, 7th grade's 7C homeroom brought in the most for our grade, bringing in over half 77 of those 167 items by themselves! Make sure to congratulate your 7th grader for their work in giving back to the community around the holiday season!

What's Happening in the Classroom?
Ms. Wojcik - Math and 7th Grade Team Lead
In our Accelerated course, students are working on creating and evaluating inequalities and expressions with variables. We are practicing combining like terms, factoring, and expanding using the distributive property. Before break, we finished unit 3 and students have since been offered an extra credit opportunity to earn back point they may have lost. Students will have a small quiz on Monday January 23rd.
Asking for Notebooks and Folders! Each student was given a math notebook and folder at the beginning of the year for notes and to complete warm-ups in. Many students have lost their notebooks and folders, though not all. Please check in with your child to see if they have their notebook, and if they do not, please secure a notebook and folder for your child to use in class.
Want to Extend Students' Learning At Home? Have them complete Zearn lessons for 10-20 minutes each day or on the weekends! Students can access Zearn through any electronic device and log-in via Clever!

Ms. Calderón - Art
Ms. Frank - Intervention
In intervention, students are currently exploring a variety of texts, poems, and articles with a focus on the importance of representation. We are discussing the importance of mirrors and windows, which is the idea that students should see a reflection of their identity and experiences in the texts they read as well as have opportunities to read about characters with different identities, experiences and perspectives. Students analyzed graphs and data that highlight inequities in representation across race and ethnicity and discussed the impact this has on our society. Moving forward, we will continue to explore the impact of representation in real world scenarios with a focus on pop culture and political leaders and representation in our government. Throughout the unit, students will have opportunities to analyze data, conduct research, and deepen their written and oral communication skills.
Extend their learning at home:
Ask them what they are learning about school and what thoughts and feelings it brings up for them!
Discuss current examples of representation in pop culture, politics, and everyday life.
Read together or discuss what your child is reading independently.
Encourage your child to practice skills on Lexia or other Clever programs at home.

Ms. Taylor - Social Studies and Science
It's imperative that our kids have both a Science and Social Studies composition notebook as we explore concepts in these subjects. These notebooks not only serve as an organizational tool but as a student reference resource as we navigate abstract and concrete topics this year.

Mr. Walker - English Language Arts
Students are in a unit focusing their efforts on examining the characters in A Raisin in the Sun. They will be writing an essay on the character development of one of the characters in the book and also spending time watching the film as well.
