Anne Arundel County 4-H Happenings
May 2023
Hello 4-H Families
4‑H STEM programs provide youth with opportunities to learn about Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) through hands-on projects that incorporate each of these four elements into the activities our educators and volunteers lead. STEM has always been part of 4-H’s history, as it has been providing hands-on learning opportunities for youth that incorporate science, engineering, and technology for over 100 years!
Last month, Maryland 4-H STEM hosted a unique Engineering Camp experience for youth with exciting drone challenges and workshops in soldering, welding and bicycle safety/parts & wheel assembly. We've included a small write-up and a few photos from the event in our '4-H highlights' section below.
This month and next month, Maryland 4-H STEM will be offering workshops to prepare for the upcoming The Maryland State 4-H Robotics Challenges. These challenges provide the opportunity for 4-Hers to participate in an organized statewide robotics activity. Youth will form teams that will build robots to perform specific tasks. The county teams will then have the opportunity to compete at the Maryland State Fair. Each year, teams of youth can compete in one of the two Robotics Challenges - the Lego Challenge and the Robotics Engineering Challenge (REC) - and both divisions will have a Jr. Division (8-11), Intermediate Division (11-13), and a Senior Division (14-18). Even if youth aren't able to participate, just watching the Robotics Challenges at the fair is so exciting!
In the coming months, UME-AAC will be offering workshops and opportunities for youth to participate in learning more about science and Maryland agriculture through educational programs where youth explore, build, design and create using their unique skill sets, all while learning about our state's diverse environment and the creatures that inhabit it. As always, hands on activities cultivate interest and allow youth to invent and discover in their own way.
We hope you'll join 4-H exploring STEM activities this summer! It's sure to be a 💥BLAST!💥
Regards,
Gretchen & Joy

National 4-H Conference
Congratulations to our 2023 National 4-H Conference Delegation that recently ended their event! Seven youth and two AMAZING chaperones represented Maryland 4-H at the 2023 National 4-H Conference held in Crystal City April 14-19th. They prepared presentations for Federal Partners, networked with 4-H’ers from all across the US, gave back to the D.C. Community through a Service Project and got to meet with at least one of Maryland’s representatives. Please congratulate our 2023 delegation:
Kira Anderson, Anvita Divvela, Andrew Fulco, Brady Larkin, Brennan King, Kayden Knappenberger, Vicky Shan, Gretchen Sumbrum and Erin Kline!
April 21 -23 was Engineering Camp!
So much fun packed into a few days! The event consisted of team challenges and workshops and kicked off with a guest speaker demonstrating the use of drones in agriculture.
Drones were also the focus of the team challenges. First, each group chose a name and logo. Additional challenges included building a tower, with design constraints, to land the drone on, and programming the drone to complete an obstacle course using scratch coding. The course consisted of flying through a hula-hoop, picking up objects and placing them at other sites, triggering a sensor to make a noise, and successfully landing on the tower.
There were three workshops offered: soldering, bicycles, and welding. In soldering, youth constructed quiz boards that light up when users identify correct answers; this task involved learning basic circuitry as well. Identification of bike parts and tools, riding safety, and changing a flat kept youth busy in the cycling session. The welding instructor introduced participants to the different types of welding, safety equipment and procedures, and assisted youth with constructing a penholder.
Engineering camp provides a window into new experiences and opportunities and the workshop included insight to possible careers. Here are a few cycling Careers/Employer examples:
Transportation Planning Board - prepares plans & programs that the federal government must approve in order to receive funds; coordinate transportation decision making
Department of Transportation - ensures our Nation has the safest, most efficient and modern transportation system in the world, which improves people’s quality of life
Software Engineer - use technology to help athletes of all levels Improve their lives & achieve goals. Develop and maintain apps using GIS.
Nonprofit Organizations - raise awareness of the environmental benefits that come with alternative transportation; encourage cities to improve their cycling infrastructure
Our county 4-H Educator, Gretchen Sumbrum, assisted with this awesome STEM-filled event! ⬇Check out these cool 'hands on' photos below⬇
Paige Merriam announced as Maryland Horse Program Volunteer of the Year
The annual Maryland 4-H Horsemen’s Party serves two important purposes - it serves as the primary fundraising event for the Maryland 4-H Horse Program and it provides an important opportunity to celebrate the accomplishments of 4-H volunteers, members, and supporters. Each year they recognize several groups and individuals during their virtual Maryland 4-H Horsemen's Party event - this year selecting Paige Merriam of Anne Arundel County for their 'Maryland 4-H Horse Program Volunteer of the Year' Award.
Paige grew up in the Virginia 4-H Horse Program and officially joined in 1976. She was introduced to 4-H Horse Educational contests in 1980. She presented an illustrated talk, participated in the county Horse Bowl and Horse Judging contests. It was at this time that she realized that she had a love and passion for Horse Judging. She participated primarily in the Horse Project area, but she also served as a Junior Leader at 4-H Camp and attended the Citizenship Washington Focus in Washington D.C. She earned a position on the Virginia State 4-H Horse Judging team in 1984, and she was High Individual at what is now the Eastern National 4-H Horse Roundup contest. Paige attended college at the University of Georgia, where she competed on the Horse Judging team. During college, she volunteered for 4-H, both in Georgia and back in Virginia whenever she was home. She judged at Open and Youth shows, served as an official at Judging Contests and taught horse judging clinics. After graduation, Paige served as a 4-H Agent in North Carolina for two years. After two years working with Extension, she changed jobs, but continued to volunteer with the 4-H Horse program in North Carolina, officiating at county and state contests, teaching judging workshops, and serving as a judge at many Open and Youth shows. She began volunteering at the Virginia State 4-H Horse Show for the first time in 1988 and named to the State 4-H Horse Show Hall of Fame in 2018. After Paige moved to Maryland, she became a volunteer with the Maryland 4-H program. During her first year as a Maryland 4-H volunteer, she started coaching the Anne Arundel County horse judging team, and did that through 2002. Paige served at the State Judging Team Coach 2002-2004. She helped organize and put on a Statewide 4-H Horse Judging Clinic in 2003 and taught at subsequent clinics through the rest of the 2000s. Paige and her husband moved to Florida in 2017 where she volunteered for Florida’s St. John’s County 4-H program, serving as co-coach of the county Judging and Hippology teams. Paige returned to Maryland at the end of the summer of 2020 and resumed her volunteer work with Maryland 4-H soon afterwards. Paige was selected as the Maryland 4-H State Horse Judging Coach in 2021, a role she still has, and she returning to serve as a coach for Anne Arundel County this year.
People like her are indeed the heart of 4-H! Thank you for your time and dedication to the Maryland State 4-H Horse Program! We are so glad to have you as part of our Anne Arundel County programming! Don't forget tune in on May 7th, 2023 (More information above).
