Smithfield is running a FREE summer arts and technology camp for students entering grades 6-9. Students will choose 3 courses from the list below. Each course will be taught by a Smithfield teacher and will run for approximately 1 hour per day with breaks in between. Check out the course offerings below and REGISTER TODAY!

Create 3 dimensional art using a variety of materials! Have you ever wondered how sculptures are made? Learn about all the steps that go into making a sculpture beginning with an armature and ending with a finished sculpture!

If you have been playing a band instrument for at least one year, this is the group for you! Come jam with us as we play some fun summer tunes, and have a great time making music together! If you are playing in the middle school or high school band next year, this is also a great way to keep playing over the summer and enhance your skills! Flute, clarinet, oboe, saxophone, trumpet, french horn, trombone, tuba, and percussion players are welcome! Please indicate how many years you have been playing your instrument. (High school band members will be joining us to help out and play along!)

Ever wonder who designed the logos for your favorite brand? The poster for your favorite movie? In digital art we will explore the digital world of art from graphic design to illustration.

Art has always been a way for artists to express themselves. Explore topics of identity through meaningful projects and experiment with different materials in a safe space meant for creating!

Do you like to make videos? Are you creative? Are you interested in movies and films? Want to learn something new and exciting? Then this is the perfect class for you! GreenScreen Magic is a hands-on, multi-media production-making program for all levels of students. Students work in teams to leverage their collective production skills, filming, recording, and green screen knowledge to create fun, engaging, and innovative short films and creative masterpieces.

Open to all levels of guitarists, including beginners. Have fun building your skills as a guitarist and performing in an ensemble setting. Bring your own guitar or use one of ours.

In this course, we will dive into the history of hip hop, explore the many elements of hip hop culture, and learn how to write your own beats and remixes. If you are interested in electronic and computer-based music, this class is for you.

Learning to play an instrument and make music with your friends is not only so much fun but also a great workout for your brain! Now is your chance to learn to play the flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, or trombone at absolutely no cost to you!! Bring your own instrument or use one of ours! Manga, Anime, and Comic Book Design! Learn how to develop your characters, storyline, and illustrations. This class will help you develop your own artistic style and you will even learn to make multiple copies through the technique of printmaking!

Students will explore a variety of art media from paint to paper and everything in between. Enjoy working on multiple theme-based projects throughout the week, and develop an appreciation for a new material!

Let's get outside and make nature-inspired art! Do you love nature and art? This course will include nature drawing, collage, and more! We will learn about environmental artist Andy Goldsworthy and other artists who use nature to create and inspire their work.

Just like a piano has 88 keys, a chorus is essentially one musical instrument where each voice is a small part of the whole. In rehearsal, we will explore the basics of vocal technique (posture, breathing, tone production, and resonance) and learn how to sound good as an ensemble. To show what you've learned, we will perform fun selection(s) at the end of the program.

Exercise creativity, explore the engineering design process, and invent creative solutions to real-world problems using LEGOs to build amazing robots! Learn about more advanced coding and sensors to program an autonomous robot. Practice your teamwork and competition skills through engaging and exciting challenges and competitions. Students in this class will be working with SPIKE Lego robots to design, build, code, and create innovative solutions for lots of different fun and exciting challenges!

This class is for the advancing/advanced player. This class is open to guitarists, bass players, keyboards, drums, and singers. Guitarists should be familiar with standard major and minor chords and also comfortable playing in higher positions. Keyboard players should also have a working knowledge of standard chords and be comfortable reading music. Bass, drums, and singers should all have at least a year of playing/singing experience. Students will essentially be forming a rock band and focusing on rock repertoire. Students will experience working as a team while gaining ensemble skills and having lots of fun along the way.

Learn about musical theater by performing in a scene! You may be cast in a lead role, as an ensemble member, or as a director position. You won't be required to sing solo if you don't want to, but there will be plenty of solo opportunities! We will cover the basics of singing, acting, blocking, and choreography. Our final scene(s) will be presented at the end of the program.

A new and exciting class open to all plucked or bowed string players. Instruments may include guitar, ukulele, violin, mandolin, etc. This group will focus on ensemble playing. Musical arrangements will be custom-made to fit whatever instruments are in our group. We can provide guitars and ukuleles.

Do you love to draw and want to improve your skills? This class will look at how professional artists use sketchbooks to practice their art and develop ideas. Sketchbooks are such a personal thing to artists, so students in this class will have the opportunity to dive into drawing the things they love best with the instructor there to support them!

Do you enjoy creating? Do you like art, music, science, engineering or technology? At our TinkerLab, we have a little bit of everything for every and anyone! We will provide captivating, hands-on art and STEAM activities that spark young minds and help them grow in confidence and skill. Students will have the opportunity to use their imagination, their creativity and follow their own innovative ideas to fruition. Students will be challenged to create fun and innovative designs. We will have lots of art and building materials, including but not limited to: assorted building materials, short circuits (makey makey), musical elements, and various other coding and engineering materials that will be provided for the students to create and design! Students can even explore coding and sensors and could even get to create a video game! The sky is the limit in the tinker lab, every idea is a good idea and everything is awesome! :)
