The Printing Museum explores the intersections of the history, art, and technology of printing and demonstrates its enduring impact. Virtual visits to the Printing Museum are appropriate for a wide range of subjects, whether the focus is science & technology, English Language Arts, history, or fine arts & crafts! We offer 40-60 minutes of interactive virtual tours with primary sources aligned with Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) for American History and the Revolution, Texas History and Independence, Journalism & Communications, and more, available upon request. When booking a field trip, we can offer: worksheet activities that complement museum galleries; before, during, and after activities for specific subjects; vocabulary, crossword, and word search activities.

Explore Shakespeare Through Printing History

Join us as we delve into the life and times of one of history’s most famous playwrights. Explore the history of printing from the invention of Gutenberg’s Press in the 1400s to the printing of William Shakespeare’s famous plays in the 1600s. Enjoy as we explore the challenges in publishing early quartos (books) of Romeo and Juliet, laugh as we discuss Shakespearean insults and marvel as we trace the origins of many vocabulary words to The Bard. This tour includes a study of an original copy of Shakespeare’s Second Folio, an exploration on the anatomy of playbooks and a discussion on the importance of the printed word for preserving literature throughout history.
Explore Texas Through Printing History

Learn about how Texas went from Spanish to Mexican rule to an independent republic through the life of industrious printer Samuel Bangs and the documents he printed. Examine printing’s role in establishing a government with the Printing Museum’s collection of currency from the Republic of Texas and its application in fine art and storytelling with artist Bernhardt Wall’s depiction of Sam Houston’s life through copper engravings. Students can learn about the role of the printing press in Texas’ early days and see how printed artifacts and artwork deliver rich snapshots of pivotal moments in Texas history.

Take a virtual trip to the museum and explore the earliest examples of writing, illuminated texts, and modern-day machines. Learn about the integral role printing had in transforming societies as we journey through the Renaissance, Colonial America, Texas independence from Mexico, and a mid-century newsroom. With demos on the Gutenberg and Columbus presses, students can learn the mechanics of printing and its dynamic influence on history, fine art, and communications.
