Welcome Back to School!!!
Thinking on Day 1!
Moving with Music!
STEM with School Supplies!
Important Information
Arrival & Dismissal: Please be sure you share the arrival and dismissal traffic flow plan with anyone who transports your child. We always feel for grandma and grandpa when they help out one time and get caught up in the traffic without knowing the plan!
Car riders should be dropped off at the southeast door. Pull in the parking lot just east of the building by the baseball fields, and drop off along the sidewalk. A staff member will be there each morning to greet you. Please do not release students from your car until the staff member is present. The line will move quickly if students exit vehicles as soon as you are lined up along the sidewalk. Talk to your child about walking down the sidewalk and being alert to others who are dropping off. PLEASE NOTE: A portion of Mill Street in front of the building will be completely closed to car traffic at the start and end of the school day. Our busses will be parked along the street at that time. Please help us keep the area safe for our students by lining up down Market Street and staying off of Mill Street.
At dismissal, we coordinate the process to safely release bus riders, walkers, and car riders. Bus riders board at 2:40. Walkers are dismissed after buses have left the area. Car riders will begin loading at 2:40. The car rider line is long, but we are typically loading our last student by 2:55. Car rider traffic should line up along Market Street. Please respect the others in line and refrain from cutting in at the crossroads. Be sure anyone picking your child up in the car rider line is familiar with the procedure. Some parents prefer to walk up and meet their child rather than getting in the car rider line. If you plan to walk up at dismissal, you will need to park in the east lot or at the little league parking area, then walk to the staging area to pick up your child. You may need to sign the student out or make visual contact with the teacher on duty before your child will be released. Note: We will not release students across the parking lot without a parent escort.
All walkers and bike riders should cross at the corner of Mill and Vine. We have Mill Street closed and a crossing guard positioned there beyond the time of the closure to ensure it is a safe place to cross. Please do not send your student across at Market or have them cut across the car rider line from the park. We do not have a crossing guard positioned there and there is a lot of traffic in that area. If you must come from that area, please walk your child to the school entrance. Be aware that the busses are driving into the sun as they leave our property in the morning. They are not expecting walkers from the east, so if you are walking your child from that direction, please be sure you are aware of their movement.
Student Handbook: Click here to access the 2022-2023 Student Handbook. You will find important information about attendance, procedures, expectations, and the Thorntown Way.
Visitors/Volunteers: We are excited to welcome parent volunteers and visitors for special events. We ask that visitors arrive after 8:15 to allow us to get through arrival and secure the building, before opening up the sign-in stations. We will not have visitors join students for lunch, as no visitors will be permitted in the cafeteria during meal times. Please note that all volunteers and visitors to the school must scan in with a driver's license or government-issued identification each time they visit. Volunteers will need to complete a criminal background check prior to helping with classrooms or attending field trips. Regular volunteers will still need their identification to be scanned prior to entry each time they visit. Don't leave home without it!
Breakfast & Lunch: The cost for breakfast is $1.50 per day. Lunch will cost $2.00 per day. You may set up a meal account by clicking here. This will allow you to deposit funds and receive an alert when your balance is low. If you prefer to send lunch money to school with your child, you can pay by cash or check. Your child can turn the money into his/her teacher or directly to the cafeteria manager. Talk with your child about breakfast and whether you intend for them to eat at school or at home. Many of our students go to breakfast and then we find out later they also eat at home. Let them know breakfast costs money and if you have your child eat at school, you'll want to plan for that when you send lunch money.
Snacks & Water Bottles: Students are permitted to bring a snack for individual consumption each day. We ask that they do not store snack for multiple days, as it can attract critters. Students are also invited to bring a water bottle each day, filled only with water.
