LGBTQ GIFTED STUDENTS
Recommendations for Educators
Supporting Your LGBTQ Gifted Student
Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) students need support from their schools and teachers in order to feel accepted. Teachers can best support gifted and LGBTQ students by simply listening to students and recognizing their identities.
Let's Test Your Knowledge About Your School's Climate
The School Experiences of LGBT Youth: GLSEN's National School Climate Survey
2013 National School Climate Survey
This full report includes information and insights for educators, families, and community members on making a difference in their schools in order to provide a safer school climate.
Take a look at the results and learn how your school can make a difference in the lives of LGBTQ students.
What Can You Do?
Most gifted LGBTQ students look to form a close academic and personal relationship with certain teachers. They are more comfortable talking to adults. Most of these students have used other coping strategy such as finding support groups; downplaying their LGBTQ identity; participating in extracurricular activities; developing their writing, musical, and leadership talents; and conducting research to better understand their identity.
By providing a welcoming environment, you are provided a safe atmosphere where students can be themselves and develop confidence in who they are. By placing a strong emphasis on academics, these students can develop their talents and gifts and realize that they are able to be successful and appreciated in the real world.
PBS NEWSHOUR EXTRA

GLSEN: Educator Resources
The Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network (GLSEN) provides numerous resources for educators on how to support LGBT students. There is an educator guide, LGBT-inclusive curriculum, and lesson plans on bullying, bias, and diversity. GLSEN encourages educators to use these resources in the classroom and to share with colleagues.
Welcoming Schools
Welcoming Schools offers professional development tools, lessons aligned with Common Core State Standards, and other resources to assist educators in creating learning environments where all students are welcomed and respected. Be sure to download the "Welcoming School Started Kit."
Equal Opportunity Learners
All students should be able to learn in a safe environment. It is even more important for teachers of the gifted to create safe and welcoming learning environments for their students.
