January Lowell Art Studio Updates
What's Happening In...
Kindergarten artists completed their own self-portrait and studied the rainbow this month. They pulled their knowledge and work together into a final piece that displays their self portrait and understanding of ROY G BIV. Students then created a oil pastel resist painting with hearts inspired by the artist J. Goldcrown. Soon, students are starting a mural-inspired piece along with the book Maybe Something Beautiful: How Art Transformed a Neighborhood.
First Grade:
First grade artists listened to the magical book Tar Beach, about a girl who dreams she can fly. Students completed their own flying self portrait above an imaginative city. Then, students learned that the book is actually also on a quilt, one of the artist Faith Ringgold's famous story quilts. Students then added their own quilt-inspired border to their portrait and noticed the patterns and colors included. Now, first graders are starting a heart painting and printmaking project with warm and cool colors, inspired by the contemporary artist Jim Dine.
Second Grade:
Second grade artists have learned about the contemporary work of Romero Britto, who uses pattern and shape to create mural work. Students have loved creating their own giant patterned hearts with ink daubers and are working on adding color using the bleeding tissue painting technique.
Third Grade and Fourth Grade:
Third grade artists participated in the Unity Breakfast art project, creating word prints inspired by Amanda Gorman's Change Sings. Now, both third and fourth grades are delving into architecture - becoming the architects of their dream buildings. the first step was to design the buildings, and now students are beginning to color them in using chalk blending techniques.
Fifth Grade:
Fifth grade artists participated in the Unity Breakfast art project, creating drawings inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s messages of peace and Amanda Gorman's Change Sings. Now, fifth grade artists have begun to study how to create different values with watercolor as well as different wet and dry techniques. Fifth graders have also started studying how to create shapes in perspective and will soon apply their knowledge in some city drawings over their value paintings.
