Weekly Update June 3, 2022
Head Cheetah's Message
Dear Families,
Next week will be the LAST FULL WEEK of the 2021-22 school year, and the celebrations and special events have begun! This week was full of exciting “happenings” including: PreK Graduation, a Unified Sports Event with our Center School peers, a visit from well-known story teller, Eshu Bumpus, in grades 1 & 2, a visit to Center School for grade 3, a Smart Start field trip to the Children’s Museum, and an introduction to East Hampton Public Library’s Children’s Librarian, Christine Cachuela.
Over the next week and a half, you can expect to see many things coming home with your students – artwork, school supplies, journals, projects. You may even see some writing samples from previous years, as students clean out their writing portfolios to make room for new masterpieces! Please take a moment to marvel over how much your students have grown.
With appreciation for your partnership,
Joey & Andrea

Memorial's and Center's Unified Sports Teams
Athletes from Memorial School's and Center School's Unified Sports teams came together this week for an afternoon of fun! Great sportsmanship was shown by all participants. Way to go, athletes!
Smart Start Field Trip to the Children's Museum
Our Smart Start preschoolers took a trip to the Children's Museum in West Hartford. They were able to explore, touch and learn about a variety of different animals!
Eshu Bumpus
We had a great time with Mr. Bumpus today! He put on a very engaging assembly with folktales about Why a Cat Says “Purr”, How the Hare and the Tortoise became friends, and Why Mice and Cats don’t get along! He used silly voices and singing and left an impression on many of our kiddos! He also shared a “special number” with them: 398.2, which is where you can find folktales at any public library!
2022 Summer Reading Challenge
Memorial School is so excited to kick off our summer reading program!
As a school community we applaud all you have done to support your child’s engagement and learning this school year. As we approach the gifts of summer, and a well-deserved break, it will be critically important for your learner to continue to grow as an independent reader, and to recognize reading as one of the many positive life choices they can make.
In an effort to maintain students’ level of reading independence and prevent summer reading loss, we are encouraging all students to set summer reading goals.
For 3rd Graders:
This goal should include, but is not limited to participating in our “One School, One Book” initiative. Today your reader received a brand new copy of The Wild Robot Escapes. Students have listened to book one in the series in library class, and are now ready to continue the exciting adventure independently. The audiobook version is also available.
Please take note, with the book, readers have received a reading log and a project choice board. These will be asked for in the fall.
For K-2nd Graders
This week in library class, readers have discussed goals and have received their summer reading log. This log will be asked for in the fall and readers who turn it in will be invited to participate in a reading celebration. In addition, each student was gifted a book of their choice to kick off their summer reading adventure!

Sincerely,
Mrs. Skarvelas, Mrs. Liebler, and Mrs. Flannery
Third Grade Moving Up Lawn Signs
Two years ago, due to the state-wide school shutdown, our third grade students were unable to participate in any of their year-end celebrations. As a way to recognize their achievements, and their time at Memorial School, families lined the school entryway with signs congratulating our rising fourth graders. This has now become a tradition that our students and families look forward to. Therefore, in response to popular demand, we are once again inviting you to show our students how much we care about them by sending them off to Center School in style! THIS IS STRICTLY OPTIONAL. However, if your family would like to create a congratulatory sign for the third grade student in your life who is moving on to Center School, please adhere to the following guidelines:
- All signs must be no larger than 24" L X 18" H.
- Signs may be hammered into the ground no earlier than Monday, June 13th.
- Signs should only be placed along the left sign of the entryway (upon entering the property).
- You may use whatever materials you choose; but keep in mind that the signs will be exposed to the elements.
- Signs should go home with you following your student's Moving Up ceremony. If they are not taken home, they will be discarded following the last day of school on Thursday, June 16th.
We can't wait to see all of the signs beautifying Memorial's entry.
Grade 3 Students Are Movin' On Up
Grade 3 students are MOVIN’ ON UP! Soon they will be Center School students. We are so proud of them, and can't wait to recognize their transition to 4th grade. Please plan to join us for a brief ceremony at the following times:
Tuesday, June 14th:
- Evans at 9:00
- Frost at 9:45
- Haydu at 2:00
Wednesday, June 15th:
- Hennessey at 9:00
- Rossi at 9:45
Each ceremony will be held in the cafetorium, and will last approximately 30 minutes. Following the ceremony, there will be time for pictures in our front lobby. Bring your cameras! We can't wait to see you.
