Dyer Times
Partnering with parents to create lifelong learners
Dear Dyer Families,
What an exciting time of year this is! It is hard to believe this week is our last week before Spring Break! The spring semester always seems to be a busy one, and this one is proving to be the same. We have recently had several exciting events, and have a few more to look forward to in the near future.
Thank you to all of the families who came to our Family Fun Night on February 21st! We had a wonderful turnout. It’s fun to watch our students have a good time learning with their families! Additionally, last week was Read Across America Week. Students participated in dress-up themes, immersed themselves in reading, and we had many guest readers in and out of classrooms throughout the week. It is always good to reignite excitement for reading. On March 7th, our campus will host the Pancake Supper benefiting Krum’s Special Olympics Teams. Please come support this wonderful group of students and enjoy dinner at Dyer. Tickets can be purchased at the door for $8 (children 5 and under eat free). Finally, as we go into Spring Break, we will be wrapping up our Jump Rope for Heart fundraising with some fun activities around campus.
If you haven’t heard about Genius Hour at Dyer, I encourage you to ask your children about it. Genius Hour provides your child the opportunity to research a topic or idea that he/she is passionate about. We feel very strongly about providing this opportunity because it allows our students to take ownership in their own learning. The research they do is intended to spark curiosity and encourage life-long learning, imagination, perseverance, self-awareness, and adaptability. It’s also intended to provide a sense of purpose for learning. Ask your children what they are passionate about, and what his/her purpose will be during the next Genius Hour. We have Genius Hour every Friday morning from 8:05-9:05. The only thing that could make it better is YOUR involvement! If you’re interested in finding out how you can help, please contact myself or your child’s teacher. We are eager to have you join us in your child’s education and this provides another opportunity for you to do so!
I hope that Spring Break allows you to spend quality time refreshing and spending time together as a family! Please know that my door is always open to you!
Very sincerely,
Lindsey Boone

You can also access to application at www.krumisd.net, select “Parents” and click on the “Volunteer” link. Remember, volunteers must submit an application every year to continue volunteering. REMINDER!!
If you ever need to change the way your child gets home, you MUST send a note to school or call the office BEFORE 2:30pm to ensure we are able to get the information to your child’s teacher (we WILL NOT take your child’s word on transportation changes). If you email your child’s teacher, please CC the office staff also about transportation changes. On most days the teachers are only able to check their emails on their conference periods.
Sending a note is preferably the best way to communicate with your child's teacher.

Mrs. Cayce's Computer Class sharon.cayce@krumisd.net
As you may know Genius Hour is now a weekly event at our campus. Genius hour involves a certain amount of research to be successful in the project they have selected. In the computer lab, we have experience with copy, paste and using multiple tabs. We soon will be walking through how to use these skills to get our research into a Google Doc. This is a great way for the kids to have their research at their fingertips from any device they can access their Google Drive. If you are helping with research at home, encourage the kids to copy their information from their website to a Google Doc. When copying information don't forget to copy the URL as well.

Make Reading Part of Your Family Time
Family time is so important. Why not make reading part of this valuable time with your kids? Here are some ideas for integrating reading into your daily family activities:
- Visit a library
- Start a book club with your children
- Make cookies or a cake and read the recipe together
- Put your child in charge of reading the grocery list at the store
- Play a board game together
- Point out the printed words in your home and other places you take your child, such as the grocery store.
- Take children’s books and writing materials with you whenever you leave home. This gives your child fun activities to entertain and occupy him while traveling and going to the doctor’s office or other appointments.
- Create a quiet, special place in your home for your child to read, write and draw. Keep books and other reading materials where your child can easily reach them.
Math Mania with Mrs. Hurlbut brenda.hurlbut@krumisd.net
Spring Break Math Activities
Park Visit - While playing at the park, look for shapes or patterns. Measure the playground equipment. See how many times you can go down the slide in one minute. Figure out what fraction of the swings are empty. Math is everywhere!
Flashcard Toss - Spread flashcards out in the yard. Have a race to collect the cards and answer the problems. See how quickly you can answer ten math facts.
Board/Card Games - Games are a great way to reinforce math skills. Take some time to play Chutes and Ladders, Monopoly, Yahtzee or other board games that your family enjoys.
Spring Treats - Find a recipe that sounds delicious and practice math while measuring out the ingredients. It’s a great way to use and talk about fractions, and you’ll get to eat a yummy treat when you’re done. Have a picnic and enjoy your creation outside. Most of all spend time together and have fun!
