Senior Seminar Speaker
The Senior Seminar class, developed in partnership
with the Michigan College Access Network, is now in its seventh year.
It allows 12th grade students the time and support to prepare for the next step in their education, whether that is at a college, university, trade/training school, or the military.
Each week, guests visit the class to share their knowledge and inform students of their many post-secondary education options. Here is a student reflection from our recent speaker.
Mott Community College
by Skylar Graham
Why attend community college after high school? Last Friday. the senior class had the pleasure of listening to Gary Campioni from Mott Community College. Mr. Campioni explained how attending a community college instead of a university for the first couple of years of your college education can save you a great deal of money. Mott has a deal with a university that says you can take your first couple of years there and then transfer to the university for a year to complete your degree through that university.
Listening to Mr. Campioni speak made me excited for the next couple of years of my life. He talked about his experiences, and it was like looking into the future for myself. While he hadn’t attended college recently, I would doubt that much has changed since then. Mr. Campioni talked a lot about programs that Mott offered, and it was interesting to listen to all of the programs that are offered by a community college. Many people don’t think that a community college is a viable option after high school, but Mott’s speaker was very convincing in changing that notion. I think that many people underestimate the value of community colleges. They not only are about 50% cheaper, but they offer programs that transfer credits to universities. This saves people a lot of money, and it prepares them for university if they weren’t ready to attend right after high school.
Listening to speakers talk about their colleges is very informative and interesting, and I would like to thank Mr. Campioni for coming in to talk to our class about Mott. He made many good points, and I think that Mott is a very good option for people who want to go to college but don't want to pay too much or people who are going into certain fields that require certification.
