A Weekly Newsletter from the Principal's Desk
New Year!
You deserve time to get ready for the week, to get your head in the game, to be ready for those kiddos on Tuesday morning!! Yes, we have professional development days for much needed professional development and ask that you hold them sacred, free of appointments, etc., but as we squeeze more into our Tuesday PLCs, and will also be having PD on the Kagan engagement strategies after a team returns from the Kagan conference, we know that January 6th may be best used by you spending professional development time thinking through your lesson plans, standards, looking at NWEA data etc.
We would like to have a brief meeting after first socializing over breakfast at 8:00 in the cafeteria. We value both our time to get to know each other as a team as well as time in your classroom, so that is what we will be doing on Monday! Dress is casual as we are not expecting PD guests, etc. (Jeans, leggings, hats, etc. be comfy!)
During 2020, I encourage you to have your time reflect what you value in both teaching and in life, so Happy New Year!!!! We've got this DCSS, here's to an amazing 2020!
P.S. Enjoy the throwback funny below as teachers are people too!

Professional Article: Deeping your understanding of the the Science of Reading
All teachers are teachers of reading and as education evolves and different theories of instruction have caused the pendulum to swing back and forth between a phonics based approach and Whole Language, the recent discussions have been about the Science of Reading and understanding all components of reading and how the brain learns rather than educators battling back and forth on philosophy on what approaches are better than others. Thank you to Cheryl Ferlita for sharing the article below on Fluency.

BOOSTERTHON
This year’s main fundraiser is the Southside Stingray Obstacle Challenge! It’s a two-week program that kicks off with a Pep Rally on January 7th. Families will then gather pledges for every obstacle your student completes (30-35 obstacles) at the Southside Stingray Obstacle Challenge, which will happen on Thursday, January 16th. This year our goal is to raise $10,000 for technology, musical instruments and athletic equipment, and we need your help! We’ve asked the experts at Booster to power our fundraiser to make it easier, more profitable, and more fun.
Students will also experience an amazing character theme, MINDSPARK: WILD WEST! Booster’s most exciting theme yet combines S.T.E.A.M. skills (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) with character-building. While they're teaming up with the MindSpark Kids to save Dr. Shock, our students will learn five character traits that will help strengthen themselves and our world.
Donations will go toward technology, musical instruments, and athletic equipment and the entire two-week experience. So please help our school by getting pledges from family and friends and entering them on FUNRUN.COM. Also, all families are invited to come out and cheer on our students at the Southside Stingray Obstacle Challenge. Thanks so much for your support!
Have a Stingtastic Week Stingrays!
