Internationally Speaking, with Principal Bryant
Dear SSIMS Community,
This week, our Spring Choral Concert and Spring Band & Orchestra Concert ushered us to our last few days of school in the 2021-2022 school year. SHOUT OUT to Mr. Ensign and Mr. Wambach for leading our vocalists and musicians through an incredible journey of learning and musical discovery this year. It was our school's first opportunity to resume in-person, live concerts in nearly three years! See below for some pictures from the events.
As we prepare to head into summer break, I'd like to share a few important updates/changes that will take place in the SY23 school year:
- Cell Phones & Personal Electronic Devices: we will return to an "away all day" policy in the new school year (to include headphones, earbuds, airpods, etc.). We hope this move will promote increased healthy interpersonal peer to peer interactions, social skills development, and decreased distractions within the educational environment.
- Chromebooks: we will maintain our 1-to-1 model of Chromebook use next year. This means each student is responsible for bringing their fully-charged, assigned device to school each day in a protective carrying case (one was provided by MCPS, but a personal case can be used as well). Students are responsible for keeping the devices damage-free and in good working order.
- Locker use: we will return to requiring students to store their backpacks and outerwear (during cold months) in their assigned lockers. Students are permitted to carry their Chromebook cases, water bottle, and small personal items throughout the school.
- Jag Advisory: will take place after the first block of each day, which was the original time slot prior to online learning. Next year, our school will be an MCPS Cohort 2 Leader In Me school, and these social/emotional learning based lessons will be implemented through Jag. We will also continue to use Jag in similar ways as we have during the second semester of our current school year.
More specific information about these items with be shared with you in August when we begin sending information about the opening of school in the fall. In the meantime, please support us by talking about this information with your child. We will share this information with students before they leave school as well.

We are still looking for a new PTSA president for 2022-2023. Please consider this leadership role. Please email ssimspresidents@gmail.com to let us know you are interested or have questions.
We want to say “Thank you!” to the SSIMS community for allowing us to serve as PTSA co-presidents. SSIMS is an amazing circle of families, staff and students that give, grow and support one another.
Thank you,
Heidi Armonda

Leader in Me - Parent Participation
Dear Parents/Guardians,
Our school is implementing a whole-school transformational process called the Leader in Me, which teaches 21st-century leadership and life skills to students and creates a culture of student empowerment based on the idea that every child can be a leader.
Our school will be conducting surveys to learn more about key areas of strength and areas of needed growth in our school. In order for us to have a holistic picture of what is going on in our school, we are asking all full-time staff members, parents/guardians, and students in Grade 4 and up to participate.
Parent Participation
If you decide to participate, you will be asked to complete a survey (without sharing your name or other identifying information) that will be available through the weblink below. The survey is completely voluntary, but we do hope to get feedback from one member of every household.
The parent/guardian survey takes about 12 minutes to complete and will ask questions about your child and about his or her experience in our school. If you have more than one child attending the school, you will be asked to think about the oldest child's experiences as you answer questions related to his or her growth.
Library Book Return
All library books are now due back! Please ask your student to look through their things and find all library books! They can return books from any school to SSIMS and we will get them to the right place.
