Superintendent's Message
Dear Bethel Community,
As we approach the holiday season, I would like to take a moment to reflect on the importance of showing grace and gratitude. This time of year can be challenging for many students, as they navigate the pressures of school, family, and a multitude of responsibilities. It is crucial that we support and uplift one another during these times.
First and foremost, let us remember to give thanks for the blessings we have in our lives. Our families, friends, and school community provide us with a strong support system that allows us to thrive. We are fortunate to have the opportunity to learn and pursue our individual goals and dreams. It is important to acknowledge and appreciate the privilege of education and the resources we have at our disposal.
Furthermore, let us not forget to reflect on life's blessings. Strong relationships play a significant role in our journey, and it is through these connections that we find strength and support. Our words hold great power, and the simple act of saying "please," "thank you," and showing appreciation can have a profound impact on those around us. Let us express gratitude for the kindness and generosity we receive from others.
I want to challenge each and every member of our community - students, staff, and parents alike - to support and encourage one another as we embark on a new year. Together, let us create an environment where compassion, understanding, and empathy thrive. As we engage in holiday celebrations and prepare for the fresh start of the 2024 calendar year, may we also take the time to rest, relax, and rejuvenate. It is through self-care that we will be able to bring our best self to the table.
In conclusion, let us remember the importance of showing grace during the holiday season. Let us give thanks for the blessings we have and cherish the relationships we have cultivated. Together, we can create a community that uplifts, supports, and inspires one another.
Wishing you a joyful and grace-filled holiday season.
Sincerely,
Dr. Matt Posey, Superintendent
Promoting Attendance: Nurturing Academic Success & Student Growth
As we approach the end of another successful semester at Bethel Public Schools and building-level administrators are prepare for semester exams, attendance reviews, and report cards, I wanted to highlight an important topic that directly affects your child's academic journey – chronic absenteeism.
Chronic absenteeism refers to when a student misses 10% or more of the total school days, whether due to illness, personal reasons, or other non-school sponsored activities. While occasional absences are inevitable, frequent, and unexcused absences can significantly affect a student's ability to succeed academically. At Bethel Public School, we prioritize regular attendance for all our students and have implemented measures this year to help students and families make up excessive absences with our attendance school scheduled on multiple dates throughout the 1st and 2nd semesters of the 2023-2024 school year.
It is important to understand that chronic absenteeism is not only a matter of personal responsibility, but also one that affects the overall performance of our school sites and district. Within our school district, chronic absenteeism is one of several factors used to determine both an individual school site's overall grade on their report card and the district-wide report card grade.
Considering each day missed in a five-day school week, the student can lose up to 20% of the instruction provided during that week. This implies that missing just a few days in a month or during the semester can put your child at a significant disadvantage, particularly if it becomes a recurring pattern. Over the course of an academic year, this learning loss may compound, making it even more challenging for a student to catch up.
We believe that every student deserves an equal opportunity to excel academically, and chronic absenteeism can hinder their progress. By consistently attending classes, students benefit from crucial classroom instruction, engaging in meaningful interactions with teachers and peers, and fully participate in various learning activities that shape their educational growth.
By actively addressing and reducing chronic absenteeism, we can provide a more conducive learning environment for all our students while ensuring that our school maintains a positive standing at the district, regional, and state level.
Therefore, we strongly encourage parents and guardians to make every effort to ensure their children attend school regularly. Any absence, whether related to school-sponsored or non-school-sponsored activities, can negatively affect a student's academic progress. Even extracurricular activities, which enhance a well-rounded education, should be balanced with regular attendance to prevent any academic drawbacks. It is essential to note that absences from non-school sponsored activities count against the student as being absent and do not qualify as excused absences. This means that even if students participate in extracurricular activities outside district sponsorship, such absences can put them at a disadvantage academically.
Additionally, we understand that each family may have unique circumstances that could affect attendance. If you have any questions or require further information regarding your child’s attendance, district attendance policies, the impact of absences on your child's academic eligibility, or their participation in extra-curricular activities, please do not hesitate to reach out to your child’s building-level administrator via email or by phone.
Remember, your child's regular attendance is a vital component of their educational success. Let us work together to equip our students with the tools they need to thrive academically and prepare for a brighter future.
1st Semester Achivements: Celebrating Bethel Student & Program Successes
As we reflect on the achievements of our fall extra-curricular programs and of our talented student-athletes, it is with great pleasure that we share the remarkable successes of our boy's and girl's cross-country teams and high school girl's pom team. This season has been nothing short of extraordinary, marked by outstanding performances, exemplary teamwork, and academic excellence.
We are thrilled to announce that our Bethel High School boys’ and girls’ cross-country programs have been honored with the prestigious OSSAA Distinguished Academic Achievement Award, a testament to the dedication of our student-athletes both on and off the field. Collectively, the boy's cross-country team including Luke Abercombie, Hayden Dority, Izzy Garcia, Aiden Johnson, Kadenn May, Blaze Tarbox, and Mason Whitecotton achieved an overall GPA of 3.76 while the girl's cross-country team including Baylee Tapley, Kylie Nunneley, Kimberlin Taylor, Shyla Arnold, Grace Epperly, Brylan Webb, Rianne Tinsley, and Paityn Seiger achieved an overall 3.98 GPA.
Additionally, we want to celebrate the All-State recognition bestowed upon two of our high school female runners, Kylie Nunnelly and Baylee Tapley for exemplifying their exceptional skill, determination, and commitment to excellence. Baylee's achievement marks her as a remarkable 3-time All-Stater, while Kylie secures her 2nd All-State recognition. Join us in applauding these outstanding accomplishments that highlight the indomitable spirit of our cross-country teams and the well-rounded success of our student-athletes.
It is with great pride and excitement that we take a moment to shine a spotlight on the outstanding achievements of the Bethel High School girl's cross-country team. This season, our talented varsity members—Baylee Tapley, Kylie Nunneley, Kimberlin Taylor, Shyla Arnold, Grace Epperly, Brylan Webb, Rianne Tinsley, and Paityn Seiger have left an indelible mark on the cross-country circuit.
The team's success this season has been nothing short of extraordinary. With a display of grit and determination, they clinched first place in an impressive four races, secured second place in four more, and landed a commendable third place in a challenging event. These accomplishments reflect the tireless efforts and commitment of each athlete, as well as the collective strength of the team.
At the Regional Meet, the Bethel girls demonstrated their prowess by clinching first place out of eleven competitive teams. An outstanding achievement unfolded as four of our runners claimed top positions in a field of eighty talented individuals. Baylee Tapley led the charge, securing first place, followed closely by Kylie Nunneley in second place, Kimberlin Taylor in third place, and Shyla Arnold with an impressive sixth place finish.
The journey continued at the State Meet, where only the top twenty teams earned the privilege to compete. The Bethel girls highlighted their tenacity and skill, achieving a commendable fourth place overall. Notably, the girls team emerged as the top public-school team in the 3A state competition, solidifying their status as a force to be reckoned with.
As we celebrate these extraordinary accomplishments, we extend our heartfelt congratulations to each team member, their dedicated coaches, and the entire support system that has fueled their success. The Bethel High School girls cross country team has not only made our school proud but has set a standard of excellence that will inspire future generations of athletes. We look forward to witnessing the continued success and growth of these exceptional young women and eagerly anticipate the exciting chapters that lie ahead for the Bethel HS Girls Cross Country Team.
Additionally, we are thrilled to shine a spotlight on the incredible achievements of the Bethel High School pom team in their inaugural year, marking a journey that began in August 2022 and concluded in May 2023. Although officially approved by the board on December 13, 2021, these dedicated performers wasted no time making their mark.
The team, consisting of talented members Marlee Affentranger (Senior), Kinsley Clanin (Junior), Rachel Drew (Sophomore), Portlynn Franetovich (Sophomore), Lorelai Payn (Freshman), Kalyn Sherwood (Sophomore), and Braelyn Stafford (Freshman), displayed remarkable skill, determination, and teamwork throughout their journey.
The pom team's first major endeavor was the OSSAA Regional Game Day Pom Competition in 2022. Despite being just 0.6 points away from qualifying for the state, they displayed resilience and sportsmanship. Learning from that experience, they returned this year with unwavering dedication.
In the 2023 Regionals, the Bethel HS pom team secured the 14th position, earning them a well-deserved bid to the state competition. This achievement was particularly noteworthy as the top fifteen teams advanced. The team's journey did not end there competing at the state level, they secured an impressive ninth place finish in their division, which featured 5A schools and included several private institutions.
This outstanding performance not only displays the talent of the pom team. Their commitment to excellence, continuous improvement, and teamwork has undoubtedly left a lasting impression on the school and the community.
As we celebrate the success of the pom team's first year, we extend our heartfelt congratulations to each member and express gratitude to the coaches, supporters, and everyone who played a role in making this journey possible. The Bethel HS pom team's future looks bright, and we cannot wait to see where their passion and dedication take them in the years to come!

Anger and how to deal with it!
Many educators are seeing more and more anger issues in students. Students are having a difficult time knowing how to regulate what they are feelings and identifying it. There are important points to remember about anger. Anger is a natural emotion. Sometimes anger can be a good thing. For example, anger might give you energy to get something done or to stand up for what you believe in. Feeling angry and managing anger in healthy ways can also give you the chance to set a good example for your child. For example, when you take a few deep breaths or walk away rather than exploding, you show your child how to behave. If you feel angry and don’t give yourself time to calm down, you might say or do unhelpful or hurtful things. This can make problems worse and lead to conflict with others. Also, being around a lot of conflict and yelling isn’t good for children. They need to feel safe and secure to grow and develop well. I have attached a video link that you are welcome to watch regarding how to help kids calm down.
