WSD Department Updates: January & December
Welcome to the WSD Warrior Word Newsletter - Winter Edition!
We wanted to take this time to share our gratitude and ask for assistance as we move into the second part of the school year. WSD has had many things to celebrate as our students continue to grow in their education journey, and our department and programs have continued to work. Many have received awards, recognitions, and grants, as you will read in their updates below.
We are grateful to have our students and staff on our campus and have our facilities and schools open to community members and events. We also would like to ask for your help in our initiative to continue having our classrooms open for our students during the current pandemic. As cases arise in our area, we see the reflective numbers on our campus. We are taking preventative measures to keep our staff and students safe by following our WSD COVID-19 protocols. Our students and staff have been great at doing their part in this, and we appreciate their efforts of supporting one another, showing compassion, and grit.
To ensure that our classrooms remain open for our students, we desperately need substitute paraprofessionals, substitute bus drivers, and substitute teachers. We are asking for help from our community. Please apply if you are interested in being a part of our WSD staff. The more support we have, the greater our opportunity will be for our students to stay in our classroom for the remainder of the school year.
We consider ourselves fortunate for our district's opportunities this school year, and thank you for your continued partnership in supporting student success. Please visit our website at www.wahluke.net under the Human Resources (HR) section to view our job postings and more information about our district.
WSD is also asking voters to consider a Replacement Educational Programs & Operations Levy on February 8, 2022. The proposed two-year levy is not an additional tax, but simply replaces an existing voter-approved levy that in 2022. Learn more information on our website at here: https://www.wahluke.net/page/educational-programs-and-operations-levy
We are looking forward to embarking on the second half of our 2021-2022 school year!
Department Updates
Special Education Department
The therapy department has been working hard to get students new or resized equipment, so they can better participate in daily school activities. In conjunction with NuMotion Yakima, a durable medical equipment provider, we have been able to get the following equipment ordered through the families’ insurance: one crocodile walker (WJH) , two manual custom wheelchairs (SME and WHS) and one custom power wheelchair (ME) It's very stylish like the Ferrari of a wheelchair. It has a tight turning radius, and a range of seating positions (raise and lower to different heights and can recline to a lying position), personalization options, intelligent control system, LED lights and turn signals, infrared and Bluetooth technology, can travel at top speed and has advanced vibration reduction. It also has a long battery life and USB port for a phone.
In addition, NuMotion has provided SME with a one-year loaner, Rifton Activity Chair, for classroom use. NuMotion has also generously donated $3,000 worth of gait trainers for student use, refit student’s current equipment and completed equipment orders for families at the school instead of having them retrieve equipment in Yakima. We’ve been very thankful for the wonderful service NuMotion has provided to our students.
In November, we opened the doors to a new Learning Academy to address the academic and behavioral needs of students with severe emotional and behavioral challenges. At the Learning Academy, students work to progress in personal behavior management through a three-level system that addresses their capabilities for respect, responsibility, and safety. In a setting of effective, rigorous, and engaging academic instruction, our highly qualified staff supportively acknowledge and reinforce each child's act for positive social behaviors. We want to thank Karen Acevedo, lead teacher, along with Guadalupe Martinez and Karena Mendoza, instructional assistance, for their commitment to these students and the program.
As we begin the new calendar year, some of our students are starting state testing. The Washington Access to Instruction & Measurement (WA-AIM) is an alternate assessment based on alternate achievement standards aligned to the Common Core State Standards for students with significant cognitive disabilities. The WA-AIM is built off of Access Point Frameworks that expand upon the mathematics and English language arts Common Core State Standards and the Washington State science standards to provide students with significant cognitive disabilities a continuum of access points to the standards. The WA-AIM will measure student knowledge and skills through the use of twice annual administered performance tasks. The WA-AIM will be used for federal and state accountability in grades 3-8 and 10 for ELA and Math and can be used to meet a student's graduation pathway requirement. Science will continue to be administered in grade 11. Our students who are eligible to participate will be working on these frameworks over the next 8 weeks.
To help support our families, we are including some

Food Service Department
Have you had a chance to meet our new Food Service Associates and Substitute yet? Yaneli Suarez works at Mattawa Elementary and Morris Schott, and we are so happy she’s been able to train at both kitchens! She worked for WSD previously as a Paraprofessional with the Preschool Program, so she’s already pretty familiar with our district best practices. Kathy Blevins works in 2 departments now: Transportation and Food Service. She started last week with Food Service and will be serving our hungry Jr. High Students as they choose their meals in our busiest cafeteria. Angie Vaquez is our new Food Service Substitute, so we will have 2 people who can cover shifts as needed: Karely and Angie. Welcome to our WSD Food Service Department Team!
We have new Hobart Dishwashers ordered for all 5 of our kitchens and expect them to be delivered and installed by the first week of February. Replacing 30-year-old kitchen equipment is very exciting, especially since it is partly funded by the USDA Safe Schools Meal Grant! Hobart Services will also visit our kitchens this month to perform minor repairs and equipment maintenance so that we can prepare the best possible meals for our students!
If you have any ideas you’d like to share with our Director of Child Nutrition, please email her at jnorton@wahluke.net or call her at extension 3492. Thank you for supporting our School Meal Program!

Human Resource Updates
We celebrate a new year by looking ahead towards things we hope to experience and accomplish both in our personal lives and our school work life. This January we have already been thrown a couple challenges; weather events, and a substitute shortage. As COVID-19 cases are rising in our area, they are also rising among our staff and students. To ensure that our classrooms remain open for our students we are reaching out for help from our community and asking for interested people to please apply to be a substitute para pro, teacher, bus driver, food service assistant. It would be helpful even if you are willing to substitute for just a short time to help get through this.
Our substitute applications are available on our website at www.wahluke.net choose the HR channel and job postings. Contact the HR office if you have questions: (509)932-4565. Please pass along this information to anyone that you think would be interested. Working with our students as a substitute can be a fun and rewarding experience.

Multilingual & Multicultural Services
Happy New Year! We are entering the busy time of year for the M2 Department. Many families are beginning to return from extended holiday travel and others will continue to come as work begins to pick up in the upcoming months. Just for reference, over the past two years we have had just under 1500 students qualify for the Migrant program and this year we are sitting at over 1600 students!
ACCESS for ELLs testing will begin in February and go through March 25th. Your building assessment coordinator will get the specific testing schedule for you in the coming weeks. If you would like to take a look at sample items and the practice test, you can do so here.
Some exciting news from M2 is that we had our first Dual Language Task Force Meeting this past week, led by Dr. Barbara Kennedy. This team which consists of teachers, para educators and administrators from across the district will look deeper at current research around biliteracy development, dual language program models, and more and make recommendations for additions and adjustments for our program here at Wahluke. The task force looked closely at the Thomas and Collier graph to learn about how our multilingual learners progress over time, based on the program model they receive. For more information about dual language you can visit OSPI’s page here

Wahluke Athletics
Howdy Y'all!
As seasons and weather started to change from Fall to Winter so have athletics here at Wahluke School District! The Wahluke Junior High (WJH) basketball season concluded right before winter break began, and they had a tremendous season for all four (4) teams! The coaches did an excellent job of coaching up the student-athletes with mixing in a lot of competitiveness and fun! The other two sports that have started for WJHS after winter break were Girls Basketball and Co-Ed Wrestling. Although no competitions have occurred yet, the numbers for the girls basketball team is a whopping 64 girls (4 teams) and 17 co-ed wrestlers. First competitions will begin in the upcoming weeks for both programs!
As for the Wahluke High School (WHS) winter athletics each sport is now in the thick of league play. Although there have been some challenges due to the postponement and rescheduling of games due to COVID-19 precautions, weather, and transportation as well the season is still rolling along slowly and steadily! There are a total of five (5) programs in winter sports this year! Cheer (8 student-athletes), Girls Basketball (32 student-athletes & 3 teams), Boys Basketball (36 student-athletes & 3 teams), Girls Wrestling (13 student-athletes) and Boys Wrestling (25 student-athletes). There have been so many positives within each program as the season has gone on and truly is a testament to our coaches who put in countless amount of hours and hard work to see the success in our student-athletes, but also our student-athlete's drive and passion for all the sports they truly do care and love to participate in! Below are just a few photos of the season thus far!
Next up is High School spring athletics starting up on Monday, February 28th 2022 and registrations for those sports (Baseball, Golf, Boys Soccer, Tennis, Track & Field, and Softball). Junior high sports will start on Monday, March 28th 2022 and their registration will open up for those sports (Baseball, Boys Soccer, Softball and Track & Field) on Monday, February 28th 2022.

Wahluke Community Coalition
CADCA: The Wahluke Community Coalition was selected as a Blue Ribbon Coalition by CADCA, Community of Anti Drug Coalitions of America and will be presenting at the CADCA Forum Ideas Fair in Washington D.C. The National CADCA website has been updated with the Blue Ribbon Coalition announcement indicating the winners, you can view it here. The Blue Ribbon Coalition credential is part of a new program that recognizes high performing coalitions ...The rigorous process to determine these coalitions is the newly designed Got Outcomes! Awards program of which Wahluke was selected in 2021.
We have elected to send Lino Sanchez, the New Community Coordinator and Erika and Adrian Erazo, parents, volunteers and Strengthening Families facilitators to the CADCA forum January 31st -February 4. Erika and Adrian have been instrumental in moving coalition work forward in our area, committing their time and effort in supporting events, teaching families and advocating for a drug free community. Adrian is the parent sector leader and Erika is the president of the coalition. We are so pleased with their determination and commitment to our local families and want to share our excitement to go to CADCA and present how we were successful in reducing youth alcohol use by involving parents and families in coalition work.
HOPE SQUAD: Oscar and Lino are working on selecting the peer-nominated students for the Hope Squad. Additional funding was recently granted to the school for the development of the Hope Squad and other suicide prevention activities and training. We hope to weave this into the efforts of the school’s MTSS-B system and other work surrounding mental and emotional health for our youth at WSD.
CAREER TECHNICAL EDUCATION DEPARTMENT
On January 20th, Construction students will be going to Spokane Community College to learn about the Hands-On and Building Trades programs.
Students are preparing for their Career & Technical Student Organization (CTSO) competitions and events: The Construction students are going to Walla Walla on February 5th for a regional SkillsUSA competition, and the Engineering students are going to Spokane on the 10th for a regional Engineering Design Technology event. The outcomes of these competitions will determine the teams for the state SkillsUSA competitions in April. TSA students will travel to Redmond in late February for the Vex iQ State Robotics tournament.
The FFA chapter has scheduled Donkey Basketball for the 25th of February, and is preparing for the greenhouse season and the annual plant sale (which will include tropical plants this year) in early May. We hope you will be able to attend this fun event!

Safety and Security Department
HAPPY NEW YEAR!! Welcome back from a much-needed break. I hope everyone had a chance to re-energize and ready to tackle the rest of the school year. As the safety and security team we have continued to oversee some of the projects that we have been working on for some time. We have been able to purchase 31 new radios for the district, along with some new batteries to replace old ones. All this helps with being able to communicate important information in a timely manner. We are one step closer to finishing up our camera installation in the district by receiving our quote from our vendors. This will hopefully help with some of our graffiti issues that we have been seeing in our district.
Our Event Staff has been working security at all our winter events such as basketball and wrestling home events. They will also start to transition over to spring sports by the middle of February. There will be safety training for WSD Event Staff through the SSOCC team from ESD105. We are looking forward to a very productive spring. Have a great rest of the school year.

Student Support Services
Multi-Tiered System of Support - Behavior (MTSS-B): We have been working hard at seeing the overview of how the Tiered system works from a behavior/mental health lens and all admin and coaches have been hard at work learning and applying those systems. We have seen lots of great work from our coaches in each building setting up a great Tier 1 foundation to help all our students be successful and have started to be a part of collaborative team meetings for supporting the needs of specific students.
We have finalized our district flowchart/resource's guide for MTSS-B and will be presenting this to staff on Tuesday the 18th at each building. Take a look at the charts here. All buildings are currently utilizing the MTSS process and have a better understanding of all three tiers. Our MTSS-B district coach has been leading our MTSS District team through PD diving deeper into the strategies and interventions used in buildings for behavior issues.
Nursing Department: We finally received our hearing and vision screenings back from CBHA - working on getting those put into the system. We continue to work with DOH on all things COVID. We partnered with ESD105 to ensure we have an ample supply of COVID test kits and PPE. Continue to follow our District COVID-19 Protocols and Procedures here.
Sentinel Tech School: One highlight is that we are about to graduate as our first student of the year in just a couple of weeks! Teacher Chuck Hubbard is working on is increasing communication and collaboration with students' families. More to come on the Sentinel Tech School website here.
Counselors: The district counselors have been working to implement the ASCA model in their buildings in compliance with the new law requiring schools to have a plan in place for a comprehensive counseling program for next year. We plan to increase our focus on this project during our PLC meetings with the goal of having a well-written plan in place district-wide by the end of the year.
School counselors have had more on their plate than ever this year, and it's been amazing to see the services they deliver to students every day as counselors and as part of building MTSS teams. Thanks to work happening through the AWARE grant, we are glad to be bringing more services on board as we welcome two mental health therapists to the district. We are excited for them to team with our school counseling staff to reduce access to service barriers for our students.
Transportation: We have completed the integration of MTSS into transportation adding the data system, SWIS, and the reward system to the transportation department. We will continue to support with training during the coming months.

Teaching and Learning Department
We are in the beginning stages of our Social Emotional Learning Curriculum Pilot and our Social Studies/Since Time Immemorial Curriculum. We have a team of teachers across the district for each pilot that will begin work in selecting a curriculum to fit the needs of our students.
We are also beginning meetings with our Highly Capable Interdisciplinary Team to review our processes, procedures, and implementation.
Staff shoutout - Julie Chemodurow - She has such a tremendous work ethic and supports teachers, staff, and students. She also supported the department by ensuring we had all evidence uploaded for our Consolidated Program Review.

Library Information and Literacy Program
Thanks to the IMLS American Rescue Plan Grant we have been hard at work getting the libraries book collection up-to-date.
As of this month, all the books for the three Elementary Schools and Junior High have been ordered. In total, we’ve ordered over 2,000 books totaling $38,000. The books cover a wide mixture of fiction and nonfiction depending on the need of each building. We are also in the process of weeding the libraries to make sure the collection is up-to-date and reflect the needs and interest of our students. This work will continue throughout the winter.
We are also starting up our meetings with the Junior High design committee to discuss plans for the redesign of the Junior High library. This committee of staff and students are looking at paint colors and rearranging how the space will work as a learning commons.
The high school’s library design committee will continue meeting this winter and spring to discuss building programs and activities in the library.

Seems like lots of snow removal this year and lots of ice melt going down. The crews have been working long hours keeping our grounds safe during this cold spell. Special thanks to our crew and all their hard work!
Updates on portables: The WHS portables are getting closer to be done! We are waiting on some vendors to be able to complete some crucial parts to getting kids in the classrooms. Furniture is almost all put together and ready to go. We are also waiting on the weather to clear up, so we can get the landscaping done around them. As for the Migrant portable, we were able to get the sewer line and all the electrical conduit put in the ground over Christmas break. Now we need to get power to it and get the insides fully assembled.
Things are in motion and moving along! The Preschool portable should be showing up around the end of February, so we will start to prepare for that to show up. Weather permitting we will be able to finish installing all the new rubber playground material at all the schools. MSSE is done already and part of SME is done. Other grounds projects waiting on weather include a new irrigation filter system being installed and baseball field cleanups.

Morris Schott STEAM Elementary School
The school year is over halfway finished, and there are lots of exciting things happening at Morris Schott Steam Elementary School! As we work toward our District Mission of Every Student, Every Day we make sure we are enriching our students lives both Educationally and Socially. Our Teachers, Substitutes, Instructional Assistants, PBIS Coaches, Counselors, Secretaries, Student Advocates, Food Service and Custodial staff... every adult in our building have all been hard at work to meet Our School Board Directed Goals of Increasing Student Achievement, Managing our Resources, and Building students Social Emotional well being these last few months! Here are some examples how!
Testing: The month of January has kicked off our testing procedures, with multiple student assessments designed to target our instruction to make sure all students have what they need to meet their educational goals! Teachers and Instructional Assistants have individually tested students in overall Reading and Math ability, and increased assessments designed to diagnose what areas students need to work on most. Those assessments will then be looked at in our Professional Learning Community meetings to make sure our lessons meet those students' needs.
Library Updates: Our Students reading options at Morris Schott continue to improve the last few months, especially now as we have been awarded grant money that has allowed us to again infuse our libraries with high quality books! Angelica Spreen spearheaded this project under the assistance of Teaching and Learning Director Amy Marlow, and it is a highly needed addition to our instructional program! At the same time, collaborating with Tiffany Coulson and the Community Library allows our students to access digital books through North Central Regional Library, closing the access gap for our kids! Thanks to all the support out there working hard to get our kids what they need!
Social Emotional Teaching and Expectations: Lastly, I want to highlight the hard work of our PBIS Coordinator Chad Lednum, our Counselor Juan Mata, and our Teachers and Instructional assistants - this month we have been working hard to explicitly teach expectations and social emotional skills to the students in every situation and location within the school. Teachers too time to re-teach students how to politely ask for assistance, when it is appropriate or not appropriate in class to talk to their neighbor, and how to respectfully come to a resolution when they have an argument with a peer. Then Mr. Mata took every student around to every room they go to in the day - cafeteria, gym, playground, bathroom, hallway - and re-taught all the expectations when you are in each of those areas - like "hands to yourself", "low volume in the hallway," and "no running." Teaching students exactly what you want them to do helps increase the chance they will be successful in school, and in their life in the future! Thank you teachers and staff for all the hard work for our kids! Have a great rest of your year!

Warrior Journeys is back on Thursday, February 17th! This event is an opportunity for Wahluke HS Alumni to come back and share their Journey with our students. It is a powerful and inspiring event that was started a number of years ago by Jan Philips, a counselor here at WHS for many years. Students get to pick who they would like to attend and listen to their journey. The students typically have 3 or 4 different speakers to attend culminating with a keynote speaker at the end of the day before we leave. If you know of any alumni that would be interested please reach out to our counselors at whs_counselors@wahluke.net Warrior Journeys
WHS Parent Teacher Organization (PTO): PTO's help parent leaders make schools great! WHS Is in the beginning stages of starting a PTO. We will be having an informational meeting in the next couple of months for any parent of a high school student who is interested in being more involved with the High School. PTO's do a variety of activities to help encourage student success and participation.
Walk-through Wednesdays: We invite parents into the High School to take a tour of the school, visit classrooms, ask HS Admin and Counselors any questions, and observe passing periods and part of lunch. This is a great opportunity to learn more about what your students are doing on a daily basis here at WHS.
