The Llewellyn Friday Flyer
February 23, 2024
Dear Families,
As many of you know, PPS announced recently that 30 million dollars in cuts will need to be made in the District's budget for next year. I am sure you have been wondering, what does that mean for Llewellyn? Unfortunately, unlike this year when we were able to add staff, next year there will be many changes. While I will not name particular teachers or grade levels because these can still change, I will share that we stand to lose 3 classroom sections, our library assistant, dance, and QMHP. Additionally, music, art, and library will be less than full time, however PE will stay the same. This means that students will go to music, art and library once per week and PE two times per week. Our Special Education staff (teachers and para educators) will also stay the same. On the bright side, we will be adding a new position, an Interventionist (Academic Specialist), that will help support students in Literacy and Math. With this position, I will be able to keep one of our staff members that would have been cut. Additionally, I hope you will join me in congratulating Susan Frisby who will be retiring after 38 years in education at the end of the year! We will miss her, but I know she is excited to spend more time with family, especially her new grand-baby.
Important to note, while we will have one full-time counselor, we were only given FTE for an additional counselor one day per week. That is clearly not enough to support the social emotional health of all our students. I hope to add additional staff to counseling using Foundation funds so that we can hire another half-time counselor. Additionally, to support grade levels with large class sizes, I would also like to hire at least 2 Educational Assistants. How can you help to make this possible? Please continue to support our Foundation, whose sole purpose is to raise money for Llewellyn staffing by attending the many fun events or donating to the Foundation directly (www.llewellynfoundation.com). Without an auction this year, these are the best ways you can help to make a difference in staffing that improves the school experience for all students at Llewellyn.
Finally, while these changes are challenging, I remain hopeful that PPS will find funding sources that will allow us to bring at least some of our staffing back. Thank you for all you do to support our school and our students!!!

Welcome back everyone!
PTA Happenings
By the time you read this newsletter, our third, fourth and fifth grade teams will have participated in our local OBOB event! We had 17 teams participating and they have all been practicing for several weeks. We could hear many of them on the playground after school and even walking to and from practicing questions with each other. We’ll announce the winning team on socials as soon as the event is over so watch for our winners!
Some not so exciting news to share is that our plant sale is canceled for this year. Our garden guru, Renee Wilkinson, reported that the vendor we usually work with could not supply our sale and so we are hitting pause and hoping that we might be able to do it again in the future. If you have a connection to a nursery or know of a nursery that could possibly be a good fit for this fundraiser in the future, please reach out to Renee at reneecbwilkinson@gmail.com.
In happier news, there are some volunteer opportunities to spruce our school garden! There are several ways to help. There are several super critical construction projects like replacing the shed roof with an extension so there is no leaking inside and our Mason bee houses are protected from the rain, installing the picket fence, and removing the old bed frames. We also need some classroom garden liaisons to connect with teachers to use the garden in classroom projects and general garden upkeep. During the Harvest Festival we had some amazing volunteers so please come on out and let’s give our garden some spring love!
