Guest Speakers at Bath Tech This Week:
Elizabeth Long of Portland Arts & Technology High School (PATHS) came to visit our classroom this week. Liz is a new instructor and interested in adding technology to her program. Graphic Design students demonstrated both the print and cut vinyl process from their designs as well as heat pressing a t-shirt. In return Liz is helping Graphic Design with product photography; getting the right angle, prop, and backdrop to display our new branding in a professional manner for an advertisement. Second-year Graphic Design students will use these skills to create the name and branding of an energy drink that they will be applying to a drink bottle, t-shirt, and animated web banner ad.
Todd Gilley from Reed & Reed came to Bath Tech to provide information about the company, a major bridge builder in northern New England, and its many benefits for students who have an interest in the heavy construction industry. Mr. Gilley is the company's recruiter and discussed in detail the positions that they employ, the work they do, salary and benefits for a number of positions, and the training programs they offer. His advice on preparation for the interview process, important company values, and the personal qualities they seek were excellent pointers for students to consider when they are seeking opportunities in this field. He was straightforward about the rigors of their work in bridge builder and constructing wind turbines - a new and growing element of their construction projects.
Curry Cupoto, CMCC carpentry instructor visited our carpentry class to help promote CTE and their carpentry program. Mr. Caputo talked about the different levels of skill and pay such as the entry-level, the mid-level, and the high level. He expressed how a two-year degree will help the students be more apt to get hired and climb the pay scale a lot quicker. Mr. Caputo also compared the average cost of living to the different levels of pay to help students recognize what pathway it may take to get where they want to be financially. It was a great way to get our students to start thinking more about their future and maybe set some goals.
