Sports and Registration
Dear Parent(s),
On Monday, February 8th, Step 1 of Alberta’s four-step framework to carefully ease COVID-19 restrictions took effect. The changes to public health measures for education relate to indoor and outdoor children’s sport and performance activities.
We are in the process of creating a plan to safely offer our students after school activities. At this point, we will be offering an extension to our Phys. Ed. classes to students in grades 3 through 9. Over the next week, we will be talking to our students to see who is interested, this will allow us to put together a schedule that gives everyone time in the gym.
Sports cohorts will consist of either grades 3 - 6 or 7-9 students, elementary and junior high students will not mix. Students and coaches will wear their mask at all times except while participating in the sport. Each half of the gym will be used by a different sports cohort. We may also be looking for coaches depending on the number of teams we have.
As soon as we have the schedule put together we will share it with you and proceed with practices. If you have any questions, please contact our office.
Thank you for your patience and support as we work towards establishing a sports program at Niton Central.

Counselor's Corner
What is the purpose of Emotions?
Emotions, we all have them and we have them often, however, do we know exactly why. As the school counselor, most of my referrals are based on the idea of helping children with their emotional regulation, and in order to help them with that, it is important to find the root of the emotion and then create strategies. With that being said do we as parents understand our own feelings along with our children’s? Just like pain protecting us from potentially unpleasant situations, our emotions are also a protective factor. If you think about how you pull your hand away from a hot burner without thinking we often use certain emotions in reaction to unpleasant situations. One tool I use with kids is to encourage them to ask themselves these questions:
- What happened?
- What emotion(s) did you feel?
- What do you think your emotions were trying to tell you?
- What could you have done differently if you had listened to your emotions?
Here is a video that can help you and your child through those unpleasant emotions and better help you brainstorm appropriate reactions during those feelings.
