Hispanic Heritage Month is a time to recognize the contributions and influence Hispanics have had on the United States. Hispanic Heritage Month celebrates “the histories, cultures, and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America." This newsletter will celebrate and showcase our Henry Faculty and Staff the cultures, traditions and memories.

Sra. Vitetta - Principal

Since, I was a baby girl, my parents immersed me in the Argentinian and Uruguayan culture: music, food, traditions and learning Spanish. By the time, I was in kinder I was fully bilingual and became my kinder teacher's aide to help run small groups to translate for the other Spanish speaking students. I am proud that I am bilingual, biliterate and bicultural! I am thankful that my parents instilled this love for Argentina and Uruguay. I love both countries and all that they offer! My daughter is also being brought up the same way with "asados, pasta con tuco, gnocchis on the 29th, empanadas, alfajores, using 'che' y 'vos' and listening to tangos."

Desde que era niña, mis padres me sumergieron en la cultura argentina y uruguaya: música, comida, tradiciones y aprender español. Para cuando estaba en kínder, era completamente bilingüe y me convertí en la asistente de mi maestra de kínder para ayudar a dirigir grupos pequeños para traducir para los otros estudiantes de habla hispana. ¡Estoy orgulloso de ser bilingüe, bilingüe y bicultural! Estoy agradecida de que mis padres me inculcaron este amor por Argentina y Uruguay. ¡Amo ambos países y todo lo que ofrecen! A mi hija también la estamos criando de la misma manera con "asados, pasta con tuco, gnocchis el día 29, empanadas, alfajores, usar el 'che' y 'vos' y escuchar tangos".

Sra. Dellenbach - DI 3rd grade Teacher

I wasn’t born a latina. My love of the latin culture began when I was 12 years old and my best friend was a mexicana. Visiting her home where her mamá made homemade tortillas on the comal and everyone spoke spanish peaked my curiosity. They taught me my first word in spanish “mantequilla”. I spent my late teens and early adulthood taking road trips to Baja California to camp, chase surfers, eat fish tacos and to learn Spanish of course! I’ve traveled to Spain, Costa Rica, Panamá, Honduras, and all over México. But my favorite place continues to be Baja California Norte where the laid back beach vibe feeds my soul.

Yo no nací latina pero mi amor por la cultura latina empezó cuando tenía 12 años y mi mejor amiga era mexicana. Las visitas a su casa me dieron mucha curiosidad a ver a su mamá hacer tortillas en un comál y todos hablaron español. Me enseñaron mi primera palabra en español, “mantequilla”. Pasé mi juventud y mis primeros años de adulta yendo a Baja California para acampar, perseguir a los surfistas, comer tacos de pescado y ¡aprender español! He viajado a España, Costa Rica, Panamá y Honduras. Pero mi lugar favorito sigue siendo Baja California Norte donde la cultura tranquila de la playa alimenta mi alma.

Sra. Medina - DI Kinder Teacher

When I was 5 years old my mom and I moved to Mazatlán Mexico and it was then that I began my journey to learning Spanish and falling in love with Hispanic culture. Later in my life I studied Spanish at the University of Salamanca in Spain . My husband and children are Puerto Rican, so I also have some “Boricua” in my soul. ❤️

Cuando tenía 5 años mi mamá y yo nos mudamos a Mazatlán México y fue entonces cuando comencé mi viaje para aprender español y enamorarme de la cultura hispana. Más adelante en mi vida estudié español en la Universidad de Salamanca en España. Mi esposo y mis hijos son puertorriqueños, así que también tengo algo de "Boricua" en el alma. ❤️
