Weekly Update June 5, 2023
Head Cheetahs Message
Dear Families,
Next week will be the LAST FULL WEEK of the 2022-23 school year, and the celebrations and special events have begun! This week was full of exciting “happenings” including: Fun Days, our last PBIS assembly, and a grade 3 field trip to Palmer Preserve.
Over the next week and a half, you can expect to see many things coming home with your students – artwork, school supplies, journals, projects. You may even see some writing samples from previous years, as students clean out their writing portfolios to make room for new masterpieces! Please take a moment to marvel over how much your students have grown.
Best,
Joey and Andrea

From The Music Room
Dear Memorial Families,
It has been a joy to make music with your students this year and watch them grow! I hope your family enjoys the summer! Summer can be a great time to enjoy and explore music naturally, through experiences you’re already participating in! Here are some ideas for you and your family to explore! Happy summer!
Mrs. Maldonado
Dance Party - Turn up your favorite music and dance away, outside or inside!
Learn an Instrument - What instruments are lying around your house? Is there an old instrument that one of your family members used to play? Does someone in your family play an instrument now? Try learning to play it (with permission of course)! Ask the person who knows how to play to teach you, or ask a grownup to help you find a how-to video on youtube!
Have a Sing-Along - There are lots of different ways to have a sing-along. The main thing you need is a group of people and a love of music! Gather your family, neighbors, or friends. Then, get singing!
Be a DJ - Music can be an important part of any activity we do! Choose an activity you need a playlist for and get to work! If you can’t create your playlist using technology, make a list of songs you would use for one of the following activities!
Keep a Listening Journal - Try listening to one new song per week. Then, keep track of the songs you heard, what you noticed, and whether or not you liked them!
Make Up A Song - There are many ways to create your own song! I bet you’ll come up with something really cool!
Read Singing Books - Lots of picture books have songs that go with them! I bet you have a few at your house, or you can take some out of the library!
Make An Instrument - You may not have instruments around your house, but I bet you have the tools to make one! Maybe you and your family can make enough instruments to have a band!
Music From Different Countries - What country do your ancestors come from? Or, what country do you most want to visit someday? Pick a country. Find it on a map. Then, research online or in a book what types of instruments, songs, and singing games are traditional in that country.
Make Art With Music - Select a piece of music from any genre. Grab some drawing or coloring supplies. Turn on the music and draw what the music makes you think of or feel! Does it make you think of certain colors, emotions, or characters? Or, view a piece of artwork and create a song to go with it!
Nature Music - The natural world offers us lots of interesting sounds we can make music with! What sounds can you make from things you find in your own yard? Can you put some together to make music? Try tapping sticks on rocks, using leaves on the ground and more! What could you do with a pine cone or a seed pod?
Found Sounds - Found sounds are sounds you can make with objects around your house! Can you create a song out of some of these sounds? I bet you’ll find some really interesting things to work with!

Library and Literacy News
Memorial School is so excited to kick off our summer reading program!
As a school community we applaud all you have done to support your child’s engagement and learning this school year. As we approach the gifts of summer, and a well-deserved break, it will be critically important for your learner to continue to grow as an independent reader, and to recognize reading as one of the many positive life choices they can make.
In an effort to maintain students’ level of reading independence and prevent summer reading loss, we are encouraging all students to set summer reading goals.
For K-3rd Graders
In library classes from June 1st-June 12th, readers will be discussing goals and receiving their summer reading log. This log should be returned in the fall and readers who turn it in will be invited to participate in a special reading celebration.
In the classroom, students also has a special visit from public children’s librarian, Ms. Christine, to hear about all the exciting things the East Hampton Public Library has to offer this summer. We hope that you take advantage of the amazing programing and book selection available to enhance your child’s summer reading experience.

Summer Math 2023
Dear Memorial Families,
As we near the end of the school year, we want to make you aware of the various opportunities the district will be offering over the summer months in order to support your learner’s continued engagement with mathematics. We recognize there are many summer activities for students to support their needs. With participation in any of the activities, your child will be able to maintain their math skills over the summer months. Your support in this initiative is greatly appreciated.
